Getting There

A walk around The Hurtwood, a unique and beautiful world of heath and forest in the heart of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Hurtwood is a stunning mix of magical pine woods and heaths, ponds and glades, wildlife and wilderness. The walking route climbs to the summit of Holmbury Hill offering stunning views over the Weald to the South Downs, before passing through the pretty village of Holmbury St Mary and returning through the woodland. The route follows forest tracks which can be muddy after periods of wet weather. There are several climbs and descents throughout and some of the paths are narrow and uneven with tree roots. There are no stiles or gates on route, just a few staggered barriers. Dogs are welcome in the Hurtwood. You are likely to be sharing some of the paths with horse riders and mountain bikers. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours.

The walk starts and finishes from Car Park 1 (managed by Friends of the Hurtwood), the Holmbury Hill Car Park, which is close to the village of Peaslake in Surrey. From the centre of Peaslake take Radnor Road (heading south east). Ignore the car park on the right (Number 11) instead continue for about one mile until you reach Car Park 1 on the left-hand side. The car park is accessed up a fairly steep sandy slope, just before a sharp left-hand bend in the road. Nearest post code RH5 6NU.

we did this walk clockwise rather than the directions suggested. The views from Holmbury Hill are stunning and the trails down the west side are nicely varied in size, undulation and surface. the long straight fire road down the east side is a little uninspiring although pleasant enough hence we did that first !

Pleasant walk with some great views. The last stretch, however, seemed to go on forever! Worth pointing out that a couple of the staggered barriers mentioned no longer exist,

WalkingMuddy

Great walk and views. Pretty muddy currently as the area is very popular with mountain bikers. Last stretch was boring, I may try the other way around and finish with the views.

Excellent. Straight from the car park into a beautiful woodland walk. And the views from the top of hurtwood are stunning if you like forest walks them would recommend.

We loved this walk - and so did our very lively dog! Definitely be doing it again. Agree about the last stretch being long but it was a nice steady climb.

First to Review

First half of the walk is very enjoyable with some lovely views. However the final long stretch via the bridleway is pretty dull.
