Getting There

A circular pub walk from the Crown and Cushion in Minley near Blackwater, Surrey. The Crown and Cushion is an historic gem, steeped in history and even includes a medieval-style banqueting hall. The walking route explores the adjacent Hawley Common, taking in miles of the pretty woodland tracks with a chance to see the wildlife within the forest and the wildfowl on Hawley Lake. The shorter version of the walk is almost entirely flat, the longer loop having a few long but very gentle gradients. There are no stiles or gates on either route, just a few gaps alongside vehicle barriers to negotiate. The paths are a mixture of tarmac/stone firm tracks and softer woodland paths, the latter of which are uneven and can get very muddy after rain and in winter. One section of the route follows the tarmac access lane for Hawley Lake so take care of any traffic for this stretch. Hawley Common is part of the Minley MOD Training Area. This walk follows the public rights of way which are always open to the public, but make sure you pay attention to any safety notices, don't allow children or dogs to stray too far and be prepared for sudden noises! Approximate time 2 to 2.5 hours (or 1.5 hours for the shorter version).

The walk starts and finishes at the Crown and Cushion pub in Minley near Blackwater in Surrey. The pub is just 2 minutes from Junction 4a of the M3. From the M3 head north along the A327 (Minley Road) and you'll come to the Crown and Cushion on the left. Approximate post code GU17 9UA.

I’ve given this 5 stars because it’s a good route to follow. I don’t think it’s the most exciting place to go to ... at least to begin with but the area is huge and is absolutely ideal for a trail run or even biking! Walking round is also great to get mileage in. The walk becomes more interesting when you see the lake. As you walk round you get to see more of it and there is even a beach side with white sand! It is beautiful and I have never seen so many ducks in one place ever! This place was great for this and you can even go in the water. I didn’t go in but I saw kids going in ... although watch your steps as I think it gets deep pretty quickly when you get to a certain spot. So yes a very pretty part and it was great to discover this one!

This was a lovely walk once we got away from the road and traffic noise. We did the longer version. The woodland paths were beautiful and cool on a hot day. Sadly the part round the lake was completely spoilt by there being hundreds of people and the most litter I’ve ever seen anywhere! Disgusting!

Great walk but the route could avoid tarmac as there are many paths off but if you are biking then fine. Good balance between shade and no shade on a very hot day.

Lovely walk through forest, remarkably dry and firm underfoot considering recent torrential rain. Quite a bit of tarmac, which wasn’t an issue for us as also plenty of off lead opportunities for the dog. Lovely sandy section by the lake that our dog particularly enjoyed. Sadly the crown and cushion only allows dogs in the garden, so we didn’t stop. One we would do again, especially recommended for periods after heavy rain. Perhaps not great for a very hot day unless you do the short walk only

Lovely walk on a well maintained path (with a nice pub at the end!). Easy to follow, short route around the lake if 8.4kms is too far. Busy on New Year’s Day - lots of families out for a stroll.

In fishing season the fisherman which there are quite a few of are not impressed with dogs off lead by the lake.

This is an enjoyable walk that starts and finishes at a nice pub. It is also suitable for during wet weather, while there are a couple of small muddy sections it is pretty good overall. The only problem we had was with some of the route description where there were a lot of paths close together. To solve this use the GPS map as well.

Nice trail through woods and some tarmac roads, only a bit muddy in places. We did the long loop and only took us 2 hours at a moderate pace. Very nice walk back to the start via Hawley lake.

We really enjoyed this walk, we ummmmed and arrrrrred over wellies but thankfully we didn't wear them. Lovely wide footpaths and only one small very muddy but dodgeable path. There is 1 bit of road walking but on military ground so very few cars. It's a very bizarre area from dense green vegetation to baron land and water loved it

We really enjoyed this one, our favourite so far. Nice wide tracks through the trees which were dry underfoot even though it was nearly November. Two climbs which were just the right amount for us. We'll be back!
