Getting There

A circular walk from the village of Ripley, taking in Papercourt Reservoir, open fields and a short stretch of the River Wey Navigation. This walk is published through a collaboration with the Surrey County Council. The walk is almost entirely flat. The paths are all unmade, following the edge of waterways and fields, and can get very muddy at times so good boots are required, or wellingtons with grips in the winter months. You will need to negotiate a number of footbridges, some kissing gates plus three stiles (all of which have gaps within the adjacent fencing for dogs to pass through). Whilst the majority of the fields are arable, you will need to cross one field which is likely to be holding Dexter cattle. The field is very large (and the crossing relatively short), but do take the usual care with dogs in this field. Allow 2.5 hours. There are public toilets in the car park at the start of the walk and plenty of options for refreshments in Ripley High Street before or after your walk. Ordnance Survey Map: Explorer 145 Guildford and Farnham. This walk follows public footpaths and bridleways which cross private and public land. Information is included for your interest, but please respect people's privacy, keep dogs under control and remember the Countryside Code.

Ripley village is located just off the main A3 road, about 6 miles north-east of Guildford. The walk starts and finishes at the Ripley Green free car park, accessed from the High Street, just by the village sign. Approximate post code GU23 6AN. Once on the Green's access road, you will come to the car park (with toilets) almost immediately on your right. If this first area is full, there is a second car park further to the right or a third one further ahead on the access road. If you are coming by bus, alight in Ripley High Street and enter the Green via the access road by the village sign. Maybe it is nicer in the summer, but we found this one disappointing. Seems out of place on surreycc website compared to the spectacular walks we’ve found recently.

Walking

Not a lot going for this walk; Papercourt lake is pleasant enough, as are the short stretch of the Wey Navigation and Ripley Green, but the majority of the walk consists of overgrown footpaths around what appears to be a former landfill site. If really bored, you could count the landfill gas vent pipes; I got to twenty nine.

Flat trail with nice views round Papercourt and on Wey Navigation. Take a plastic bag with you as plenty of opportunities to pick blackberries currently!

Walking

An easy but uninteresting walk. Most felt like we were just walking around the edge of the same large field. Perfect if you are looking for a flat, unchallenging walk, but overall we found it a little boring. Parking on the green at Ripley was also quite busy, we were lucky to find a space.

I’m giving this 5 stars! It was a beautiful and easy walk to follow. It was pretty with the lake to view and the river and then the other running water we saw (but I couldn’t tell you what it was - perhaps you know?) it was a lovely walk and we saw beautiful flowers and even insects resting on plants it was lovely. A very tranquilly place I’m going again tomorrow! In the description it doesn’t say there will be stiles but there were a fair few on this walk and I love them so it absolutely made my day!!

Lovely variation of reservoir streams fields and quiet paths. Didn’t notice any rubbish that someone mentioned. Very easy.

Walking

a lovely walk when the sun is shining and the ground is firm. I imagine it could be pretty muddy in several patches if had been raining beforehand. The combination of fields, river, lake and canal makes it interesting. however on the negative side there a few places - such as the area around the Send business Park, which are strewn with rubbish. similarly around se several of the farms, there is junk everywhere. For a local walk if you live in the area or near West London, its a good option. But the litter in parts colours the experience somewhat.

Lovely walk on a dry summer day. Paths all clear although we avoided section between 2 and 3 as first part starting at allotments was a bit overgrown. Thank you to those who look after the paths and provide great map and directions. You are appreciated.

Did not enjoy. at least two miles covered in nettles and brambles and alongside large corn filed so no views anywhere, one to avoid in late summer.
