Getting There

A circular walk through the village of Pyrford, near Woking in Surrey. The walk has plenty of interest passing the ruins of Newark Priory and Pyrford's Norman church before heading across peaceful farmland to Pyrford Lock and returning alongside the picturesque Wey Navigation. The walk is generally flat with just one very short but fairly steep climb to the church. There are two stiles (both in open fencing making them easy for dogs to pass under) and several gates including a kissing gate. There is one section of road walking along a narrow pavement at the beginning. The walk crosses a golf course so take care here to avoid the balls flying down the fairways! The paths are mostly mud towpaths and field paths all of which may be muddy after wet weather. The towpaths are quite narrow so take care with children. Approximate time 1.5 to 2 hours.

Free parking is available in the small car park (with a height restriction barrier) immediately south of the traffic lights over Newark Lock on the B367 (Newark Lane), south of Pyrford Village. Approximate postcode GU23 6DP.

Very muddy, wellies only option! Beautiful along the canal path.

Lovely trail to begin with but became unbearable by the last quarter due to how muddy it was (see photos) I wouldn’t usually mind if there was at least some dry bits but there were points where there was no choice but to have your feet submerged.. also quite unsafe considering how narrow the path could be so you’re forced to be walking along the river bank with the high chance of slipping and falling in! Wouldn’t recommend without wellies or to anyone who struggles staying upright. Also as you can also see from the pictures there is a part where you come in very close contact with cows, despite the electric fence it’s quite scary to have a cow bowling towards you with no where you can turn. Not for the faint hearted.

The right before the pylon didn’t seem to exist - we had to do an earlier right that led onto some roads and rejoin walk that way. Also incredibly muddy and slippy near the end - wellies rather than walking boots advised.

Nice for an easy pre-lunch Sunday stroll. Shame that 1 of the 6km is basically on a pavement next to a busy road. Golf course route is wrong next to lake too. But towpath walk delightful.

Nice flat walk. No golf going on so quiet across the course. Muddy in parts by the Wey.

Nice walk. Footpath by the road quite narrow at the start, and we also got lost on the golf course (much to the golfers dismay), but the stretch along the river is lovely. The Anchor Pub is open now.

Footpaths weren’t closed (see previous review). Very enjoyable walk but went slightly off course on the golf course - the route seemed to want to take you down a fairway

Really enjoyed this walk. So much that we would come back. Plenty of variety and interest. I understand people’s concerns about the first stretch on a pavement by the road if you had small kids etc. but it’s only short and you’d miss out lots of interest and lovely views. Ideal to have a pub at the midpoint for non COVID times.

A lovely, mostly flat walk with lots of interesting things to see. The directions are great and the map is very useful, especially when crossing the golf course. We started at 9.30am on Sunday and passed a few other walkers and cyclists, but it was never busy. We walked quite briskly and it took 1hr 20mins. It would also make a great trail run.

Gorgeous waterways but that road walking is dodgy, the council need to cut the greenery back as not much room on the path and they speed in their cars

We really enjoyed this walk. It had a lovely feeling about it and there was lots of water and bridges featured in this trail. The only reason I gave 4 stars is because of the huge amount of midges there were in the final stretch along the towpath on the river ... there were sooooo many and I got 4 bites tonight - yes and this is probably because we went in the evening. Don’t let this put you off. It was a really lovely walk and we both enjoyed it thoroughly - I definitely recommend it!

What a beautiful walk. The only think I would do differently is, will walk both ways by the river coz the other way was quite a lot on a road.

really lovely (and quiet) walk along the river and through some farms - just a shame not to be able to have a half way pint at the anchor pub due to lock down!

We enjoyed this walk, although the first part along the road is a bit hazardous particularly with dogs. Navigating through the golf course was a little tricky but added to the fun, definitely needed to use the map for this part. The anchor pub makes for a lovely stop.
