A circular trail around Great Bookham Common in Surrey. The common is managed by the National Trust, was mentioned in the Domesday Book and comprises grassland plains, mighty oak woods and serene ponds. There is plenty of wildlife to enjoy throughout the year, including nightingales in the spring and a large population of butterflies in the summer. There is even chance to spot the beautiful, but elusive, purple emperor butterfly. The walk is relatively flat, with just some very gentle slopes. About 80 percent of the route follows a compacted stone path, with the remaining section along a grass track (which can be very muddy in winter). If you would prefer to stay on the surfaced path, you can turn around and retrace your steps once you reach the grass bridleway, resulting in a there-and-back route of 2 miles. The grass track has tall staggered horse-barriers at each end; these are about 1.4 metres high so most pushchairs and disability buggies should be able to pass under them quite easily. There are no other obstacles on route (no gates, stiles or steps). In the dry summer months, it would be possible to take a pushchair or disability buggy around the entire route, and the in the wetter months, the there-and-back option can be used instead. Dogs are welcome on the common (in fact, it's a popular dog walking spot) and dog waste bins are provided. Allow 1 to 1.5 hours.

Nice easy trail with ponds where you can birdwatch, great for baby buggies and dog walks

Beautiful. One steady hill climb, but the rest of the walk flat. Pass by a series of ponds with lots of bird life (saw three herons sitting on the same tree) and if you veer off the main paths, again plenty of nature to enjoy. A few more benches along the main paths wouldn't go amiss.
