Getting There

Please note: the Semaphore Tower is closed for renovations. A circular walk from Cobham, taking you through the beautiful countryside around Downside and discovering the local history and wildlife. This walk is published through a collaboration with the Surrey County Council. The walk has a few climbs and descents throughout. The woodland and field paths can get very muddy so good boots are required (or wellingtons with grips in the winter). You will need to negotiate kissing gates and steps plus 22 stiles. A few of the stiles are very tall and awkward to cross and so would be difficult for less agile people. Some of the stiles have dog gates, but a couple of the tall stiles towards the end of the walk have tight fence surrounds so dogs may need a lift over. You will be sharing some of the fields with horses and sheep and sometimes cattle so take particular care with dogs. There are a few long stretches of road walking along quiet country lanes so please take care of traffic at these points. Allow 3 hours. Refreshments are available at the start or end of the walk, in Cobham. Alternatively, The Black Swan is a 0.3 mile walk along Ockham Lane (heading west) from Waypoint 4. There is a picnic site at the Semaphore Tower (Waypoint 3) if you wish to take refreshments with you. Ordnance Survey Maps: Explorer 146 Dorking, Box Hill and Reigate and Explorer 145 Guildford and Farnham. This walk follows public footpaths and bridleways which cross private and public land. Information is included for your interest, but please respect people's privacy, keep dogs under control and remember the Countryside Code.

Cobham is located just south of the A3, on the A245. The walk starts and finishes at the Hollyhedge Road pay and display car park (just off Downside Bridge Road). Fees are £2.60 for 3 hours or £3.60 for 4 hours (correct April 2015). There are regular bus services to Cobham from Kingston, Esher, Epsom and Weybridge. For help with planning your journey by public transport please visit http://journeys.travelsmartsurrey.info. Approximate post code KT11 3DQ.

Not a great walk to be honest. Maybe we’ve been spoilt walking in the Surrey Hills but there was nothing of interest. Crossing the m25 bridge was the most exciting bit! Old Oak Common was terribly overgrown and made it for a pretty miserable walk there.

Trousers are pretty essential for this one!! A LOT of stinging nettles have overgrown some of the paths, but it’s still very easy to follow. I passed a couple wearing shorts and they looked like they were in quite a lot of discomfort! Lovely walk though.

Walking

It was a beautiful day when we did this walk so it was dry underfoot and I reckon it would be okay even in wet weather but you may need boots instead of trainers. The route was lovely. We passed horses in open fields which was great and lots of fielded areas but on the whole the scenery was changeable and it was a varied walk in terms of what you could see and what kind of terrain you were in. We crossed the bridge of the M25 which I’ve never done so just had to mention that one. Also we got stuck in the little village as it was telling us to go through someone’s house .. we tried diverting but it still kept taking us back so we ended up having to jump over a fence in an allotment to rejoin our track lol it was rather funny.. although later we saw a couple who were doing the same route using this app and they seemed to not have this problem? So maybe we mistook a normal for field as someone’s garden... it was very enjoyable anyway.

Pleasant easy walk through some pretty countryside. Easy to follow route, pretty flat, not too much on roads. Much less waterlogged and muddy after this dry spell than when we've done previously!

Nice easy walk.Mostly dry with lots of wildlife and bluebells along the way. We parked next to Downside bridge on the other side from Cobham. The last bit along the road is a bit boring so you could reverse the walk and do that first to get it out the way.

We walked this trail from our house 28 March 20.Most of the standing water and deep mud had dried leaving a few soft patches. A delightful walk mainly on footpaths .You pass through a few fields with horses and sheep so its essential to keep dogs under control.

Great trail and easy but very muddy in places. There’s actually free parking just after Downside Bridge, but we parked where advised and did a bit of shopping in Cobham in independent food shops. Walk had a lot of views and variety. Pity the Semaphore Tower is closed for renovations.

Lovely walk with easy to follow instructions. The very last kissing gate at Chilworth Farm needs repairing so you may find it easier to climb over it.
