Getting There

A circular walk around the footpaths and lanes of the Surrey Hills taking in Blackheath Common, the Chilworth Gunpowder Mills, the Tilling Bourne (a small tributary to the River Wey) and the picturesque village of Albury. A wonderful mix of woodland, heath, fields, riverbanks and lanes there is something for everyone on this walk. Much of the walk is relatively flat, with only a couple of steady gradients and there are just three stiles all of which are low and have gaps at the side to allow dogs to pass through easily. Some of the paths can be a little narrow and overgrown so you might want to think twice about wearing shorts unless you're immune to nettles and brambles! The surfaces are pretty good but of course are likely to be muddy in wet weather. Approximate time 3 hours.

Free parking is available at the Blackheath Common car park on Blackheath Lane. Blackheath Common lies to the east of Blackheath village. Blackheath village is east of the B2128 and south of the A248. Approximate post code is GU4 8RD. The nearest station is Chilworth which is about one mile to the north (if you come by train you can adjust the walk by starting and finishing in Chilworth rather than Blackheath).

Such a pretty walk with lots of variety. And so quiet. Plenty of shade for a hot day. The road before Albury was busy, but there was pavement, and it was a short stretch. One our new favourites.

100% would recommend this walk! A bit of everything for everyone, ruins, river forests and fields. A few steep inclines however nothing too strenuous. Took just shy of 2 hours which also included a snack break

Absolutely great route. And very well described through the waymarkers - thank you. Walked this with my wife, 5yo and 9yo and I would class this as Easy and not Moderate. Loved it :-) A peaceful Sunday afternoon/early eve during lockdown. Just what we needed!

The car park is tiny and it gets so busy they start queuing so get there nice n early to get a space The road walk through Albury is all on footpath then when you fork off by the round house, your on a farmer’s road so there’s next to nothing with traffic Gunpowder ruins make this worthwhile on their own Definitely wear wellies in winter

HikingMuddy

Well marked trail with a variety of scenery from, rolling hills, heath, river and woodland. The section after the gunpowder mill was extremely muddy, almost impassable with no obvious alternative and the farmers electric fence is right up to the wire instead of a foot back from the main fence like most fields which caused my Dad a nasty shock but it was the 1st of Feb so wet conditions expected. A couple of longer than I’d like sections of road walking in Albury and Chilworth but otherwise a very pretty and interesting walk.

Really enjoyable walk with lots of variety. We took our dog who enjoyed the paddles in the Tillingbourne, especially during our coffee stop at the Drummond Arms. We did the walk in dry conditions and still found it to be quite challenging for a 2-boot walk, with quite a lot of up and down. In wet conditions the path down the hill to Chilworth would be very muddy so be prepared for that. Our dog had to be on the lead quite a lot due to road traffic and livestock, but there were plenty of off-lead opportunities too.

Good walk and think it will be better in the summer (with a picnic!).

A lovely walk. Great, varied scenery. The directions were excellent. The gap in the fence mentioned in the penultimate paragraph is actually a staggered wooden fence but apart from that minor detail, everything was very clear.

Great walk but a bit slippery on downhill footpaths due to the previous wet weather. Found out a bit of history I did not know. Really enjoyed it

Beautiful walk. Very varied and worthwhile stopping for a drink by the pub -Drummond-in Albury (seats by the stream) and do take a small detour to the church in Albury. A lot of nettles at the start only had me regretting wearing shorts but no issues after. Highly recommended

Great walk. We liked the circular track and the different areas of the walk from waterside to woodland. We also had lunch in a pub in Albury
