Getting There

A circular walk around the Banstead countryside, close to Chipstead in Surrey. This beautiful route follows paths through chalk grassland, mixed woodlands and open farmland, all rich habitats for a range of wildlife and flowers. Several of the woodlands are filled with bluebells in the late spring and the chalk grasslands are home to rare plants such as greater yellow rattle and orchids. This walk is published through a collaboration with Surrey County Council. The walking route includes climbs and descents (some of which are quite steep) throughout and follows a mixture of field, woodland and grassland paths. There are many intersecting paths in parts of the commons, so the app's live GPS map will be the best tool to aid navigation. Some stretches can get muddy and slippery after periods of rain and in winter, so good boots are a must (or wellies with grips in the winter months). You will need to negotiate several kissing gates and bridle gates plus some steps, but there are no stiles or livestock on route. There is no road walking involved, but there are a couple of road crossings that need care. Allow 3 hours. There are no refreshments or other facilities directly on route, but you will find The Ramblers Rest on Outwood Lane, just a short drive from the car park. The area is covered by Ordnance Survey Map Explorer 146 Dorking, Box Hill and Reigate. This walk follows public footpaths and bridleways which cross private and public land. Information is included for your interest, but please respect people's privacy, keep dogs under control and remember the Countryside Code.

The walk starts and finishes from Holly Lane car park (which is free of charge and has a 1.9m height restriction barrier), near Chipstead in Surrey. The start of the trail can be reached by public transport. Chipstead rail station is around 500m from Holly Lane car park, about a five-minute walk. For help with planning your journey by public transport please visit http://journeys.travelsmartsurrey.info. Approximate post code CR5 3NR.

I'm only giving it a 3 because at this time after snow and cold, it was like a slip n slide! Either were slipping on the mud or sliding on the ice frozen on top of the mud. Also, you can pretty much always hear cars. Good for if you don't want to go too far out of London and for bird watching

Great loop, mostly dog friendly. Muddy but not as bad as other places we’ve been this week!

Probably my favourite walk on this app! Absolutely loved it! So peaceful. Car park is packed, but we barely passed anyone on the 5 mile loop! Really beautiful and only a few inclines so a nice easy walk. We will Defo do again soon! Very muddy in parts!

Never thought it’ll be so nice just few min. Away from the town. Was so full and the moment you’re in the trail, you see very few people around. Nice and easy trail with fun for kids who can explore nature and jump around on broken trees. It has something or the other for every age! Stunning views too! Plus country side feel

Very well described, hence easy to follow. Be sure to get to the car park before 9 otherwise it gets very busy. Extremely muddy at this time of year. Take care on the slopes and wear wellies

A busy walk and car park was full by 9am. When we returned at 11 there was a queue to get in. However this is Lockdown v 2.0. That said, this is a very enjoyable and varied walk so well worth it.
