Getting There

A circular walk around the Banstead countryside, close to Chipstead in Surrey. This beautiful route follows paths through chalk grassland, mixed woodlands and open farmland, all rich habitats for a range of wildlife and flowers. Several of the woodlands are filled with bluebells in the late spring and the chalk grasslands are home to rare plants such as greater yellow rattle and orchids. This walk is published through a collaboration with Surrey County Council. The walking route includes climbs and descents (some of which are quite steep) throughout and follows a mixture of field, woodland and grassland paths. There are many intersecting paths in parts of the commons, so the app's live GPS map will be the best tool to aid navigation. Some stretches can get muddy and slippery after periods of rain and in winter, so good boots are a must (or wellies with grips in the winter months). You will need to negotiate several kissing gates and bridle gates plus some steps, but there are no stiles or livestock on route. There is no road walking involved, but there are a couple of road crossings that need care. Allow 3 hours. There are no refreshments or other facilities directly on route, but you will find The Ramblers Rest on Outwood Lane, just a short drive from the car park. The area is covered by Ordnance Survey Map Explorer 146 Dorking, Box Hill and Reigate. This walk follows public footpaths and bridleways which cross private and public land. Information is included for your interest, but please respect people's privacy, keep dogs under control and remember the Countryside Code.

The walk starts and finishes from Holly Lane car park (which is free of charge and has a 1.9m height restriction barrier), near Chipstead in Surrey. The start of the trail can be reached by public transport. Chipstead rail station is around 500m from Holly Lane car park, about a five-minute walk. For help with planning your journey by public transport please visit http://journeys.travelsmartsurrey.info. Approximate post code CR5 3NR.

A busy walk and car park was full by 9am. When we returned at 11 there was a queue to get in. However this is Lockdown v 2.0. That said, this is a very enjoyable and varied walk so well worth it.

Love the walk. Parking spaces are quite limited. Wondering where else to park if car park is completely full next time.

Banstead woods is so packed these COVID days this walk is a way to get away from the crowds. It was a bit muddy in parts but still refreshing.

Lovely walk, mostly woodland with some open fields - no livestock which was great. Mostly easy but some short, steeper sections. Took me 2 hours with my dog. Would be good for a running route too.

Really enjoyed this walk, I managed to detour a bit making this walk 10km but it's a good walk with some moderate climbs through the forest and some less well worn paths so shorts will get you a few nettle stings! There are some lovely open fields en route and in the Summer Months amazing corn fields and wild flowers. Keep an eye on the map though as there are so many alternative tracks to pick up along the way.

A nice walk with varying landscapes. Probably nicer in the spring with the. bluebells but still enjoyable in July!

A pleasant and fairly comfortable walk although looking at the other reviews I feel that I missed out on the ground flora season. Nice hillside views near the beginning and towards the end. Enjoyed, but probably once is sufficient.(might have to go back for the Bluebells though!!)

Lovely trail. Lots of beautiful wild flowers, it’s dry right now but there is a couple of sections that will be difficult in muddy/wet conditions

Really pleasant walk with two young kids through woodland and meadows. Good for a hot day with plenty of shaded sections. Car park busy at the start of the walk but then very few other walkers for the duration.

Lovely easy going circular walk with lots of variations so you can adapt if you want. Shaded areas through the woods and wide open fields with good views as well. Car park was full but still not busy on the route and easy to social distance on most parts of the route when we saw people.

Nice trail through woodland and open fields with great views across the Surrey hills. Busy at the start but quietened down as we walked on. Comfortable distance and only a few inclines. Lots of routes to make it longer or shorter or to mix it up a bit.

Lovely little walk. First 5-10 minutes you can hear the busy road, but after that it’s a peaceful walk with some stunning scenery
