Thor's Cave is a 5.6 mile loop trail located near Ashbourne, Staffordshire, England that features a river and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and bird watching and is accessible year-round.
Just outside the village of Wetton in the Peak District National Park you will find Thor’s Cave, a natural cavern set in a steep limestone crag in the Wetton Hills near the Manifold Valley. This is an awesome route with many different types of terrain: roads, paths, steep hills and steps. The variation makes it more enjoyable and a bit more of a workout. Please note that this trail can be extremely muddy which makes it very challenging in those conditions. After all of the hard work, the views are truly incredible.
Amazing walk! However the map wasn’t that accurate got lost and had to work out which way to go, regardless was still a great walk, would do it again
Amazing bit slippy track but what a walk and views were unreal.
This would be a great route if the course was plotted a bit better. The plotted route doesn't stick to the paths particularly well. For example the route goes to the summit of Wetton Hill instead of following the path. We got lost a few times, it's a good job we had a torch. Still had a great adventure.
First time to this trail and was really enjoyable. Different types of terrain with roads, paths, steep hills and steps but made it all the more enjoyable and having to have a little bit more of a workout. Was muddy in places but that’s what to expect when going in Autumn time following some bad weather, it certainly didn’t take away the beauty of the walk. Didn’t pass many people during the walk and once at Thor’s Cave, managed to enjoy that with no one else there. Views all over are definitely worth it and I’d certainly do it again.
I did this on Tuesday before lockdown 2 started. As the weather was bad and it was so muddy I only went to Thor’s Cave this time and back to the car. Never seen anywhere before so muddy as this was! I did thought hike to the top of Thor’s Cave which you can have a good view of the valley ahead. It’s such a beautiful place and I will go back in the summer time to get even better views to see more. I also went into Thor’s Cave which was brilliant and I recommend. I would just wear gloves and be careful. As it was raining it was very slippy. When inside and even if it is cloudy the views are great! Can’t wait to go back. The route to the cave was so muddy like I’ve never seen before to either go to the cave or hike to the hill above it. Lucky I brought spare trousers and shoes for the ride home. Boots all clean now but they were a mess! I was impressive with the car park as it was free and looked like it had new tarmac. Very handy having the public toilets there so I could dry up and get changed. I did pop into the local pub after for a drink which was a nice old country pub. I would also take it slow going up to Wetton where the car park is round the lanes incase someone is going the other way. In better weather I’ll look at doing this full route circular route.
Awesome trail! Tougher than your average moderate, but really enjoyable.
Really hard, muddy in areas, high inclines with hills and small Mountains, rewarding views, Thor’s cave slippy inside, struggle with the little dogs! And dark when we got there, but sunrise on the fields was lovely!
We enjoyed it lots, it was a very fun trip and one for the family too!
the cave was very impressive and well worth the visit! the rest of this trail is on roads though and a bit boring so we went off course and just wondered through some fields which made it prettier! we parked at a free car park in Wetton.
It wasn’t well signposted, after parking we crossed the bridge and continued in the same direction (following the directions on the app) and we need to cross over barbed wire farm gates and walk through sheep in order to follow the route. It drizzled on our walk and we had a very intense descent from the farm land down toward accessing the cave. The ground was like clay and incredibly slippery. When we got to the cave we needed to climb on hands and feet to get inside. Due to the weather it was very slippery. The cave was a beautiful sight to behold. I wouldn’t recommend for children or dogs. On the climb down we saw some steps which led us back to the bridge we walked across at the start. We came across a tree that was covered in coins which was a surprise. You get some fabulous photos on the walk, but in our case very dirty hands, feet, clothes, and a bruised shin.
Did it backwards and the end was absolutely awful. Got a bit lost and stranded trying to climb over barbed wire fences but all in all, a good walk
