Getting There

A circular walk of just over 10km from the classic Cotswold town of Burford in Oxfordshire. Take in the beautiful mellow stone buildings of the medieval town, savour the peace of rural farmland and then enjoy a lovely stretch along the banks of the River Windrush for the return leg. The walk is relatively flat, with just a few gentle gradients. The paths are mostly unmade and can get quite muddy after periods of rain and in the winter months. You will need to negotiate 5 stiles, some steps, several kissing gates and one cattle grid. The stiles all have adjacent dog gates or open fencing surrounds that should be suitable for most dogs. There is also some open fencing to the side of the cattle grid that dogs can slip through (although humans will have to pick their way over the grid!). The meadows alongside the river are sometimes used for grazing so take care with dogs. There are public toilets in the car park at the start of the walk.

Burford is located in the Cotswold Hills within Oxfordshire, about 18 miles west of Oxford and just two miles from the Gloucestershire border. The town is accessed from the A40 road, at its junction with the A361. The walk starts and finishes at the town's free car park on Church Lane. Follow the A361 High Street north through the town and then turn right into Church Lane (signed with a blue P for the car park). The car park can get full at peak times so arrive early to avoid disappointment. Approximate post code OX18 4RZ.

Absolutely loved this walk. Some stunning big open spaces, perfect for fine weather picnics. It will be flooded at the end if there’s been lots of rain. The dogs loved it!

Very scenic but flooded right at the end. We walked on the road on the last part into Burford. No problems at all!

Beautiful walk with glorious views. Weather sunny but cold. Muddy in places & had to deviate onto road by river due to flooding.

Great walk although very muddy at this time of year but we were dressed got it! Lovely countryside, pretty houses and an all round pleasant walk. Really enjoyed it. Free parking and plenty of pubs (if not mixing households)! in Burford at the end for refreshments. The weather was much better than expected too. Would recommend.

Very pleasant walk, in open country, along a stretch of the river, passing the tiny St Oswald’s church Widford. Really enjoyed it

Walking

We really enjoyed this walk. Only a small stretch or road to walk next to, otherwise, lots of countryside and a nice walk next to the river. Walk description also had some good comments on local features which was good. Stopped off at The Royal Oak at the end as we walked past it, had a very nice meal in there. Free parking also a bonus

An enjoyable work in autumn. Quite muddy tracks after all the rain we have had. A nice mixture of fields, woods and country scenery. Yes, there is some road walking-but only leaving Burford and then re entering. Would do this walk again.

HikingNo shade

At least a half of the track is alongside the busy road or just throw fields. Boring and not very pleasant, as no shade on the way and endless traffic is passing by

Really enjoyed this walk! Car park can get busy. Walked with 2 dogs some lead walking at the beginning and end, no issue as there are footpaths. No cattle in any of the fields today, but think that was just luck as they rotate between neighbouring fields. A few stiles, had a bernese mountain dog and he managed them. Will definitely revisit

Great walk, road out of Burford and then on the final leg but mostly open country! Great for dog walk, but take water. There is no water source until the river near the end.

Excellent walk, very varied, with a small amount of road walking at the start but otherwise perfect for our exciteable spaniel puppy to roam mostly off lead.

Really great walk over easy terrain but long enough to work up a good appetite. Burford is a beautiful little town.
