Getting There

A walk to visit the enchanting waterfall, Hareshaw Linn, in Northumberland. The walk leaves the village of Bellingham and follows the pretty stream, Hareshaw Burn, up along the gorge through beautiful woodland to reach the impressive waterfall. The walk follows a solid stone and rocky path for the entire length which can just have a little surface mud. The route includes several climbs and descents and there are several flights of steps, a couple of gates and some footbridges to negotiate. The path can be slippery in part and the gorge sides slope steeply away down to the stream so take particular care with children and dogs. Dogs are welcome on the path to the waterfall, as long as they are under close control. The car park has an electric car charging point and rubbish bins but no other facilities. Approximate time 1.5 to 2 hours (longer if you spend more time admiring the burn and falls).

Bellingham is located on the banks of the River North Tyne, close to Kielder Water in Northumberland. The walk starts and finishes at the Hareshaw Linn Northumberland National Park car park. From the main B6320 through the village, turn onto the side road between the post office and Lloyds Bank, signed for the Heritage Centre and West Woodburn. Cross the bridge and then (with the police station on the right) take the first road on the left. Follow this road ahead and you will come to the free car park on the left. Approximate post code NE48 2DA.

Lovely, gentle walk with great views of waterfalls. I would mark it as an easy walk rather than a moderate one. Most of the families on the route were there with little children under 5 years old.

Nice hike! It’s beautiful and the waterfall is really nice. Just a heads up, you will arrive at a tree in the path. Just maneuver your way through and continue to reach the big waterfall!

We had a lovely walk up to the waterfalls. It’s really pretty and our 2 year old walked it so pretty easy walk. We would definitely recommend this walk.

a great trek up to the waterfall, mostly easy trails with the odd uphill challenge, not too challenging though but with well thought out benches at the top of the hills

Lovely trail, only downside is it’s one road in and out, we went on a weekend and it was quite busy so we were constantly passing people. Apart from that lovely location. A group of people were swimming at the foot of the waterfall which looked amazingly refreshing

Great walk. Beautiful scenery and the reward at the end of the trail is worth it. Not a difficult hike and it is very family friendly. Couple of picnic benches are on site which makes it handy for a bite to eat.

A Really enjoyable beautiful but fairly short walk through forests and over bridges with a lovely photographic waterfall as a payoff at the end ... it’s great for dogs too.

lovely walk with plenty of waterfalls to see. we extended the walk by starting at nearby Henselyside huts, made it around 6 miles round trip, but easy to moderate terrain meant no problem for our 6 and 8 year olds. play area in Bellingham was a nice bribe as the kids tired in the heat, quick stop there to replenish energy and the 1.5 miles back to huts became easy.

Took my (nearly) 5 year old and he managed it no bother. Trail conditions are good with lots of bugs and flowers to keep him entertained along the way.

Lovely walk today in the December sunshine. Good path with 6 bridges crisscrossing Hareshaw burn up to the falls. A little muddy underfoot at times but you would expect that at this time of the year. Maisie (my border terrier) thoroughly enjoyed the exercise.

This is a great experience. The area around the waterfall is somewhat magnetic in that it makes you want to stay, look and listen. No wonder why it has been popular through the ages.
