Getting There

A circular walk from the village of Welburn in the Ryedale district of North Yorkshire. This walk is great if you and your dog would like to stretch your legs on a fairly long, flat walk, through beautiful woodland and fields with inspiring views of the Castle Howard estate. The Howardian Hills and its pretty villages offer a calm and peaceful landscape for you and your pooch to wander through. The terrain is easy to moderate, with fairly gentle slopes along grassy paths through wooded areas, on tracks and quiet tarmac roads. You will need to negotiate several kissing gates and footbridges plus one stile (which has a dog gate alongside). There are plenty of off-lead opportunities for your dog on the quiet paths, but please observe signs regarding nesting birds in Spring and Summer. Whilst most of the farmland is arable, you will cross at least one field (within the Castle Howard estate) that may be holding cattle and sheep. Allow 2.5 hours.

The walk starts and finishes outside the Crown and Cushion pub in Welburn village. Turn off the A64 York to Malton road at Barton Hill, following the brown signs to Castle Howard. After passing under the monument, turn right at the crossroads following the sign to Welburn. Roadside parking is available in Welburn village. Approximate post code YO60 7DZ.

This is such a lovely walk, lots of people about especially families but still easy to social distance. lovely views, good for dog walking and lots of open space for kids to run around. I will definitely be back. Bonus was the little cafe in Welburn at the end, food was delicious.

Lovely scenic route where you can see bits of the Castle Howard estate. Not too hilly & great for letting the dog off the lead

Really good walk, just one field with cows (end of June 2020). Lots of off-lead time for the dog. Wasn’t muddy despite it being a rainy day.

Beautiful walk with nice mix of open views as well as shade through the forest areas. Great for the dog and plenty of places for them to be off lead.

Really lovely walk, lots of nice views. Thought it would be okay for dog to be off lead but there are quite a lot of sections where that's not possible

Went for this believing it to be good for a dog walk. Though dogs are to be kept on the lead for virtually the whole walk. We all thoroughly enjoyed it but will be going elsewhere for off lead time.

Walking

This was a really enjoyable walk on a very sunny January morning. Lots of beautiful open countryside and plenty of space for the dog to run around. It was muddy due to the recent rain, but nothing a pair of wellies couldn't handle. When you get back to Wellburn we'd highly recommend the 'Four and Twenty Blackbirds' café for a bite to eat. A great way to finish a very enjoyable walk!

Good trail, with fab views of Castle Howard and its follies, but very muddy given the recent weather. A field of Kune Kune pigs provided lots of entertainment as they jostled about.

A lovely walk starting in Welburn with a straightforward amble near the castle Howard estate. Good paths which can be muddy in a few places. There's a large field with cattle in but they caused no issue as you're skirting on the edge of the field. Overall a lovely walk that can be enjoyed in various directions.

Great walk for my reactive dog with lots of wide open spaces. We do avoid the end section and backtrack once we get to the woods again as there are some narrow overgrown parts that would be difficult if we bumped into anyone. The hill through the woods at the start is quite steep and can be very muddy and slippy, but otherwise a lovely walk. You can also park at Castle Howard and start the walk there. Which avoids the large hill in the woods. There are several parts that you can walk on to extend the walk too, but that does involve some road walking.

Great easy walk. You may have to walk through a field of cows, that did say beware of the bull. We didn't experience any problems, but it did worry some of our group. The walk through the bluebell woods in the second part was beautiful. We finished at the pub and had Sunday lunch. This was very nice although a bit pricey for a pub. On the plus side, they welcomed the dog in the bar with a bowl of water and a treat.

Fantastic walk around the outskirts of Castle Howard with many great picture opportunities. During Spring Summer there are signs up around about 1/2 the route to keep dogs on leads due to nesting birds. Our dog still had great walk non the less.
