Getting There

A circular walk between Swinton Park and the North Yorkshire market town of Masham. This is a lovely varied walk, enjoying beautiful riverside paths alongside the River Burn and River Ure and visiting the bustling town of Masham. There are plenty of opportunities for dogs to take a paddle in the rivers. The town is known for its two breweries; Theakstons and Black Sheep Brewery. This walk is part of the Swinton Estate Trails collection, published through a collaboration with Swinton Estate to encourage people to discover the 20,000 acre Estate with varying terrain such as woodland, reservoirs, moorland, gardens and parkland. The walk is relatively flat, with only a few steady gradients and nothing too steep. It follows a mixture of unmade riverside paths and quiet lanes (so take care of any traffic). Some stretches of the riverbanks can become muddy and a little overgrown at times (so long trousers are recommended). Most of the route is free from livestock, but you will cross one pasture that is likely to be holding sheep. You will need to negotiate a few gates, some steps plus 5 stiles (including V-shaped stiles, vertical wooden rung stiles and wire fence stepovers). The stiles all have fence gaps suitable for up to medium dogs to squeeze through (our standard poodle just fitted), but larger dogs may need a lift over. One stretch of the walk follows the edge of a golf course, so watch out for any stray flying balls. Allow 2 hours. There are plenty of options when it comes to facilities. You will find the Terrace Restaurant and Bar within the Swinton Hotel complex at the start and end of the walk. The bar area is dog-friendly, there is a beautiful courtyard garden and walkers will receive a warm welcome. If you want a mid-walk pit stop, there are plenty of pubs and tea rooms plus public toilets available in the market place in Masham.

If you are a visiting walker, please park in the Swinton Country Club and Spa car park. From Masham, head south on Park Street and then turn right into Swinton Terrace (which becomes Swinton Road). After about a mile, you will see a side road and the impressive stone gates for Swinton Park on your right. Do NOT enter these gates, instead turn right to follow the side road. Ignore two more gateways within the wall on your left (the first is Exit Only and the second is for Deliveries) and take the third gateway which leads you into the parking area for the Country Club and Spa. Approximate post code HG4 4JH.

Definitely not the most interesting river walk around. Over a mile of walking along the road and by the gold course the path has completely eroded be warned. I used it to try out the app for the first time and now have confidence to try something longer.

Nice, easy walk that circulates Masham, following the Burn River and River Ure until entering the Masham Nature Reserve at Marfield Quarry.

Nice easy walk, with the added bonus of Masham about three quarters of the way round. One thing to mention though, we were looking forward to a drink at the Terrace Bar after the walk, which according to your description will give a warm welcome and is ‘dog friendly ‘. Perhaps it was a bad day, but we found the opposite to be true. Our welcome was a bit icy as we had our dog with us, so we decided not to bother. Nice looking place though. ADMIN RESPONSE: Glad you enjoyed the walk and thank you for the feedback. We will pass this on to the owners of the estate who are keen to welcome walkers (and dogs) to the bar.
