Getting There

A circular and very challenging walk, passing through some wonderful limestone scenery as it visits the iconic Yorkshire Dales sites of Janet's Foss, Gordale Scar, Malham Tarn and Malham Cove. With beautiful waterfalls, a lake, a limestone pavement and an impressive natural cove you will be spoiled with natural delights along the way. The walk follows a mixture of roads and dale footpaths. There are several climbs and descents throughout. You will need to negotiate flights of steps, kissing gates, gates and a few stiles (of various designs, including stone wall stiles and ladder stiles). The challenging part of the walk is a scramble up Gordale Scar - a rocky climb which is suitable only for experienced walkers and should NOT be attempted after periods of heavy rain (when the waterfall can be flowing strongly) or in icy conditions. You will be sharing much of the open moorland with free roaming sheep. Allow 4 hours.

From Skipton, take the A65 to Gargrave (4km). Turn right and follow the road in to Airton village (4 km). From Airton, follow the road through Kirkby Malham to Malham. Park in the National Park Car Park which is found on the left just before entering the village. Approximate post code BD23 4DA.

excellent walk, Goredale scar was a bit intimidating as approaching it I realised the route meant climbing up the waterfall which wasn't what I expected, not for the faint hearted, it was manageable but also quite challenging which made the walk even more satisfying. the climb has plenty of foot and hand holds so looks harder than it is. After that its easy walking with great views. I'd highly recommend this route and was definitely one I'll remember for a long time.

Absolutely stunning walk but this certainly isn't a hard walk. The climb of Gordale Scar is hard depending how confident you are but definately worth it. There were lot of people about today and before I went up I only saw two attempt it. But there are lots of footholds and places to grip so a great experience. Other than that it's a very straight forward walk with beautiful scenery. Janets Foss is stunning and Malham Tarn is nice to sit have brew ava sandwich (chose as my pit stop) Malham Cove is stunning. Great to see the limestone pavement where Harry Potter was filmed and the views from the top are superb. Awesome day, awesome place. Where else would you want to spend Yorkshire Day

Best walk we’ve done so far ... breathtaking views and scenery. Gorsdale scar gets the heart rate going and definitely wouldn’t recommend for inexperienced walkers ... it is a proper rock climb. Plenty of people didn’t fancy it and turned back to go up the path ... absolutely awesome walk!!

Beautiful walk in fantastic conditions. Super breeze as it was hot hot hot! Couldn't carry enough water but plenty of beautiful streams if you are brave (disclaimer-water may not be safe to drink but me and my buddies are fine!). The 'scramble' is more of a rock climb but other than that it's just beautiful but easy walking. Would 100% recommend but maybe not if too hot as zero shade

Great walk with dramatic views. I parked just outside the car park on the road side and donated £2 as suggested. As I was out with the dog and the falls at Gordale Scar were flowing heavily I didn't fancy the scramble and so detoured by going back out to the road and walking up the side of the gorge and joined back up with the route at the top, which ensured I didn't miss out on the spectacular view from above.

This is a great walk with brilliant views. The Gordale Scar is worth visiting even if you cannot climb it . There was too much water coming down when we were there. It is easy enough to return back and take the alternative path which reconnects you above the Scar. Well worth a visit.

Would highly recommend this trail as you can break it down into different sections or just do the whole thing. Unfortunately couldn’t climb up the waterfall as the flow of water was too strong and made the rocks slippy and was very windy. However the views are amazing. My first hike with my partner with plenty more to come.

We did this walk yesterday and would like to add that it is not a scramble up Gordale Scar, would say that it was meant for experienced walkers on this type of terrain and not good for dogs. The walk was lovely but we had to take the road around Gordale Scar.
