This is the classic Malham round for anyone not familiar with the area. Janet's Foss - Foss is an old Scandinavian word for a waterfall. According to legend, Janet queen of the local fairies, lives in a cave behind the waterfall. Gordale Scar is the most awe-inspiring place in the Yorkshire Dales with its overhanging rocks and waterfalls. It was formed when hue amounts of water from melting glaciers scoured away the rocks. The water that pours out of the scar is full of lime and is deposited on the rocks as brown spongy tufa. The upper waterfall spills in spectacular fashion through a circular hole. Malham Tarn House is a field study centre and is owned by the National Trust but is not open to the public. It was built by Lord Ribblesdale as a shooting lodge. It was here that Charles Kingsley drew inspiration for 'The Water Babies'. Malham Cove has been a wonder of the Yorkshire Dales since people first starting visiting. At its base the water that seeps out is NOT that from Malham Tarn which disappears at 'Water Sinks'! falcons have also been seen in the area.

Great hike. There are some very touristy sections for people just going to the cove or Gordale Scar, but there are plenty of beautiful views to make up for it.

The water flow was way too strong to go down past the scar, so the walk took longer as we had to go back on ourself. But it was all beautiful!

Such a lovely walk! We did this clockwise (backwards) so we ended up scaling down Gordale Scar which isn’t for the faint hearted but we absolutely loved it!! A dip in Janet’s Foss waterfall was also lovely at the end!

Lovely walk, especially the parts around Malham Cove, where the scenery was fantastic. The route was pretty busy, but still fun! We didn't even attempt climbing Gordale Scar (WAY tougher-looking than I expected!). We chickened out and took the path leading uphill behind the ice cream shop instead. I'd definitely recommend this walk if you're in the area :-)

Great route! Some lovely pubs about half way for a nice little stop! There’s a small scramble up the water fall, it looks harder than it is from a distance but easy enough if you don’t mind getting your boots a little bit wet. All in all lovely walk.

HikingGreat!

Absolute scenes on this trail. We went late afternoon and the weather was belting. We couldn’t climb up the waterfall at the scar as the flow was over almost all the rocks so super slippy. A gorgeous trail with a decent amount on grass which was different for me. Super popular with lots of cars but would definitely recommend going later on in the afternoon if the weather is set to be good. Some nice pubs in Malham for after the walk.

So we followed the trail, however, you absolutely cannot climb the scar (as the trail tells you to!!!!!!) unless you have ropes/experienced. We had to turn/walk back from the scar, follow a different path over the hill (path starts behind the ice cream/cafe just before the path leading to the scar)... very good walk, but if following the trail to the T... this is definitely hard.. not moderate. Would recommend

Absolutely amazing hike - one of the best I’ve ever been on. The landscape is phenomenal. I definitely recommend doing the walk in this direction as you see all the 3 main sights in the best way. Things to be aware of: the steps down at Malham Cove are many and steep, and the first part of the scramble up the waterfall at Gordale Scar is a little sketchy, and not doable with dogs, but is well worth the effort. I hiked it on a hot, sunny Sunday and it was very busy. If you don’t like too many people then maybe try to go on a weekday.

fairly local for us, very good easy hike. Downside is it is VERY popular, if you are looking for a fairly quiet setting avoid on a clear day.

This is a walk of varying levels of difficulty which an individual can select. Stunning rock formations & a a great water fall crevice. If you descend or ascend the waterfall this does require a little physical skill, but worth it.

One of my favourite hikes. Worth checking the water flow before tackling the waterfall at Gordale Scar. Not for the faint hearted.
