Getting There

A circular walk from Knaresborough, close to Harrogate in North Yorkshire. If your dog deserves an energetic romp, mostly off-lead, with some climbs and the added bonus of the opportunity of a swim in the quieter parts of the River Nidd, why not consider this walk? The Nidd Gorge is stunning and a magnet for walkers, while the pretty market town of Knaresborough has many dog-friendly places to pop in to for refreshments when you have finished. The route is mostly on grassy paths, tarmac lanes and cycle tracks but also includes some steep descents and climbs by the river, which may be very boggy and muddy after wet weather. You will need to negotiate several flights of steps and several stiles (all of which have gaps alongside that most dogs should fit through). There are public toilets at the car park in Knaresborough. Allow 3 hours.

The walk starts from the Conyngham Hall pay and display car park in Knaresborough. From the A59 Harrogate to York road, turn into the Conyngham Hall pay and display car park by the bridge over the River Nidd (opposite the Worlds End pub). Approximate post code HG5 9AX. By train: Knaresborough rail station is just 5 minutes' walk away, along Water Bag Bank and Waterside. By bus: Harrogate and District buses operated by Transdev serve Knaresborough.

Good walk, got a bit lost at one point as I lost signal - screen shot directions. Pretty views but no dog poo bins along the way. Ended it in the pub - worth it !

Really enjoyed the walk, especially the river section, as others have mentioned would recommend doing in reverse and stopping at “half way pub”.

HikingGreat!

Lovely walk. Ticked all the boxes for myself and OH; Riverside, woods, decent pathways and a pub just over halfway round. There is a little bit of road walking (approx 1/2 mile from Gardener's arms to the caravan park), but as it is a country back road, you could count the traffic on one hand. Very enjoyable

Was an ok walk mostly flat and easy. Very muddy in some places but was fine in boots, we detouree to walk back on the other side of the river but either way alit of road walking which I find quite tedious.

Wow. Saw this walk and knew we had to do it. Read the comments and took the advice to turn right and head to the river side first. Saw plenty of wild garlic. Loved the variety and views will do this again.

Awesome walk. Beautiful variation in landscape from riverside to fields to woodland. Well maintained and very easy to follow with lots of opportunities to stop for a little break or picnic! Definitely saved to favourites

Fantastic walk, especially if your dog (like mine) enjoys a splash around in the water!

Really, really enjoyed this walk today! Read the reviews beforehand and saw Ben Shinglers about going out by the riverside first for an easier return. So that’s what we did. My Mums been trying to build up her fitness last year but hasn’t been out for about a month. She managed this really well! So she was very pleased with herself! Will def do this again in the summer! The Gardner’s Arms which is half way round was a lovely pub for a quick drink and toilet stop! Worlds End pub was closed for lunch when we got back so drove 2 miles to The Kestrel! Was really nice!

We were staying in Harrogate for New Year so we walked from Harrogate to Knaresborough, and did the walk which was very muddy in places. When we reached the Gardeners Arms we had a welcome pint and turned right to walk back through Bilton and back into Harrogate. About 18km/ 12 miles. A good walk which shook off the New Years party! !

A really great walk! The only negative was the planks on the wooden walkways have quite large gaps between each one, our Weimaraner & Vizla kept getting their paws stuck between & we were concerned that they might hurt a leg. Other than that, we all really enjoyed it :)

Medium route with good mixture of on and off road walking. For an easier return head out along the river. Nice stop off at the pub half way.

Great walk, some steep steps to be aware of but lovely shaded woodland as well as some open countryside. The pub at the halfway point was a welcome stop!

We didn’t do the trail as we found an excellent spot on the river Nidd where are two dogs were happy for hours running in and out of the water, it was a very hot day and probably too hot to walk the dogs that far but from my experience of the riverside and surrounding areas we will most definitely be returning in the future

Good day out with Family, it was very warm and sunny but there is wooded areas that offer shade. My brother’s dog loved it as plenty of chances for a swim in the river.

Lovely walk with a charming pub half way round. Lovely large beer garden with a beck running through for the dog to cool off in and very reasonably priced! The directions were easy to follow and it was a good mixture of tarmac and woodland walking.
