Getting There

A circular walk from the village of Malham in the Yorkshire Dales, North Yorkshire. The route takes you through classic limestone scenery and visits three iconic sites - the waterfall of Janet's Foss, the steep gorge of Gordale Scar and the beautiful limestone pavement and impressive natural cove of Malham Cove. The limestone pavement has been made famous on the large screen, most famously featuring in the film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1. The walk follows a mixture of footpaths and tracks alongside rivers and through grass pastures. There are several climbs and descents throughout. You will need to negotiate steps, kissing gates, gates and stiles. You will be sharing some of the paths with sheep. Allow 2.5 hours.

The walk starts and finishes at the National Park Car Park on the edge of Malham village. From Skipton, take the A65 to Gargrave (4km). Turn right and follow the road in to Airton village (4 km). From Airton, follow the road through Kirkby Malham to Malham. Park in the National Park Car Park which is found on the left just before entering the village. Approximate post code BD23 4DA.

Great walk - easy instructions to follow, enjoyed doing the walk this way round coming down the steps from the limestone pavement rather than going up them! As others have said, it does get busy. We arrived to start about 9.30am on a Sunday morning and it was OK but by the time we got back to the car park it was full and there were two other car parks set up in fields and this was on a day when the weather was mixed.

one of my favourite walks, not to difficult and very much worth the views from the top of the cove. Great walk out for the family and the dogs. Can get a little slippy on the top of the cove when wet though.

Great walk and not too difficult, just got to be careful with your footing on some of the rocky paths.Worth taking half an hour or so to visit Gordale Scar, but the best part is the Cove, fantastic views and a place to chill and maybe have something to eat....enjoy!

Incredible day yesterday doing this trail. Weather was great. The only hard bit is hiking up to the top of Malham Cove. I even scrambled up to the top of Gordale Scar where there is another waterfall on top of it. Janet's Foss is lovely and you can swim in it. There's Gordale refreshments between Gordale Scar and Janet's Foss and a pub in Malham near the car park. This is one of my favourite hikes/walks

Wow Malham Tarn so much do, Janet Foss waterfall, legend has it Janet was the queen of the fairy’s and live in the cave behind the water fall, the pool below was traditionally used for sheep dipping, Gordale Scar waterfall, impressive, then the Limestone Pavement, anyone reckonise it? was in a scene in a famous film. 5.5 mile circular walk, moderate, saw loads of mums n dads with baby carriers, Great day out for family’s, a couple of nice pubs serving food, with excellent measures in place. 1hr 40mins away, parking £4.80 for the day

I really enjoyed this walk. We got there relatively early so therefore we’re able to socially distance. It did get busy up on the limestone payment and can be slippy when it’s raining. Janet’s Foss is ethereally beautiful and Gordale Scar is jaw dropping, it’s huge and almost incomprehensible... but that’s Mother Nature. Malham Cove has great views, but be careful if it rains, it can be very slippy.

I would recommend this walk to anyone looking for short walk with plenty to see. This is a rather easy walk and can often be very crowded especially by Janet's Foss and the Scar.

Fantastic walk. Not too strenuous. You end up at the limestone path at the end so the climb upwards is slow and gentle, which is much better than just walking straight up to it. Lots of other landmarks along the way. Would definitely recommend.

Great walk. We parked up and started at the refreshments van near Janet’s Foss as we couldn’t get parked in the village. Just turn right at the buck inn and keep the other pub on your left and carry on up that road for about a mile and a half and you’ll come to the refreshments van.We did Gordale Scar 1st and then up and over to Malham Cove then down the steps -which is probably the easiest route. Watch the limestone steps as they are very slippery when wet. Into the village for a quick pint and then along the river and woodland to Janet’s Foss. Came back out at the car .a great day!

An absolute must for a route with kids in tow. Janet’s Foss is at the end if a Fairytale walk along a secret, moss lined stream before the awesome gorge of Gordale Scar. The route up to the top of Malham Cove is via some steep steps, but the view is worth it. Good selection of pubs in the village on the way back.

Wet and windy day with low cloud around. Fantastic walk out from Malham along to Gordale Scar then back along to Malham Cove. Really slippery on the top in all the rain. Sun broke out as we sat and the views were amazing.
