Getting There

This is a circular walk from the village of Aysgarth in Wensleydale within the Yorkshire Dales, North Yorkshire. The walk takes in a woodland nature reserve and rolling farmland, with lovely views of Bolton Castle, plus one of the most spectacular attractions within the Dales, Aysgarth Falls within the River Ure. The triple-flight waterfalls of High Force, Middle Force and Lower Force stretch over a one-mile length of the river, a spectacular sight especially after periods of wet weather when thousands of gallons of water cascade over a series of broad limestone steps. The falls have grabbed the attention of many cultural icons for more than 200 years, from Wordsworth to Turner and even a Hollywood film director. The walk includes a few steady gradients but there are no steep sections. You will need to negotiate several kissing gates and flights of steps, but there are no stiles on route. There is a road crossing at the start and end of the walk that needs care. You will be sharing some of the fields with sheep, so take care with dogs. The viewing rock platform for Lower Force is open to the rocky river edge, so take extra care with children and dogs here too. Access to Lower and Middle Force is free of charge, but a small donation is requested to visit High Force (you can exclude this visit if you would prefer not to pay). Allow 1.5 hours.

The walk starts and finishes from the Aysgarth Falls National Park Centre, which has a pay-and-display car park, toilets and cafe. It is marked with brown tourism signs from the A684 in Aysgarth village. The parking fee is £2.50 for 2 hours, or £4.50 for the full day (as of Summer 2018). Arrive early to avoid the crowds during weekends and holidays. Approximate post code DL8 3TH.

Did this walk using my wheeled walker with hubby & my assistance dog. There are 2 car parks, 1 above the higher falls, with café etc, & a slightly cheaper 1 run by National trust, which we didn't find until we had walked down a VERY steep hill down to 1st waterfall, where there's a lovely little shop serving scrumptious cakes, & hot/cold drinks. Gift shop has stairs up to it, with railings, but steps up were too steep for me. Go over the bridge & take the trail up to the right. Little bit rough in areas, but I found it manageable with my walker. The steps down to the last waterfall are wide & shallow most of way down. Apart from the steps down to the viewing platform, & also the last few metres of the trail, where it becomes stony & uneven, I was able to do most of it with walker. We all thoroughly enjoyed the day. Will be re visiting this 1 again next year I think,

Easy walk but very popular. Falls looked great after rain yesterday though and the loop away from the falls was very quiet and scenic.

lovely walk. The falls and river are amazing. The walk meeds to be edited though as the paths don't take you directly next to them. we had to go a bit off course. Parts are not dog friendly as a lot of sheep. awesome overall. Luke, Sarah & Missy
