Getting There

The Farthing Downs and Happy Valley Loop starts in Old Coulsdon taking in Happy Valley, Farthing Downs and London's most southern public house, 'The Fox'. The walk includes mostly well worn paths through fields, hilltops and woodland. A few climbs provide beautiful views and make it feel like exercise. Probably the hardest of the climbs is nicely placed before reaching 'The Fox' so a stop may be required. Toilet facilities also available at Farthing Downs Car Park. Even though the walk has been designed to avoid the wettest and muddiest of areas, unfortunately it is impossible to avoid here at certain times of the year so waterproof footwear is highly advisable during and after periods of rain. The walk is dog friendly as is 'The Fox' pub, however there are areas along the walk when your dogs should be on leads because of grazing sheep and cows but usually there are many visible signs to warn you of such times. The walk described starts in Old Coulsdon, which has a few car park spaces, if full you can park in nearby streets or otherwise you could also easily start the walk at Farthing Downs Car Park or 'The Fox' which have plenty of spaces (the pub can get very busy on weekends, so spaces can fill up and if you are planning to eat it is probably best to book in advance and give yourself time to get served, you could be there a while). Quite easily accessible by Public Transport from Coulsdon South station or by bus, the No.60 to Tollers Lane/Cross Ways, Stop A.

Quite easily accessible by Public Transport from Coulsdon South mainline station, from here it is probably best to start the walk from Ditchings Lane or alternative take the bus to the described start, the No.60 to Tollers Lane/Cross Ways stop, this is just 2 minutes away from start.

Really enjoyed this walk! Easy to complete, couple of uphill walks but other than that it was a breeze. We went on a chilly but dry spring day so there was no mud. Lots of green rolling hills, lots of fields and some woodland. Amazing views also!

Such a beautiful spot yet so close to London. Plenty of spots for a picnic.

A very easy to follow organised route. Wasn’t muddy when we visited. Very easy going and flat other than a handful of short hills. Not particularly “wild”, and quite a lot of other walkers so 4 stars.

Easy to moderate walk with a mixture of woodlands and open fields, not too muddy. Had a lovely walk and our dog really enjoyed it too!

Nature tripsGreat!

Such an amazing walk! The views are stunning and you honestly feel like you’re in the middle of the countryside. Me and a friend made it into a whole day with the dog and bringing a little picnic. So stunning!!

A lovely trail with some nice views. Muddy in parts not to bad. A coffee van in the Fox car park, great coffee and delicious brownies.

This trail takes you around the valley on a small path for most of it. It was nice enough but I think there are probably nicer routes.

Really nice and relatively easy route . A couple of steep inclines but not over challenging. Some lovely views when you are on Farthing Downs. It was very slippery in places so decent footwear is essential. All in all very enjoyable

Beautiful area, especially in spring. Considering how busy the valley/woods are, it still feels a little wild and untouched which is nice. You also get amazing views and can see all the way to Central if visibility is good

Quite hard work as it was extremely windy and a lot of this walk was quite exposed. Great views and would be a 5 star walk in spring.
