This is a walk along wooded trails, some quite wet and muddy (as is normal seasonally) and new constructed roads. Being just under 5 miles long it is a good half-day filler or a good introduction to an unknown little gem. A free history trail leaflet is available from the visitor centre (toilets but no food or drink). The car park was the site of Richard Arkwright's cotton mill. It was burned down by rioters in 1779 determined to stop the march of progress (luddites). Within two years rebuilding started, concentrating this time on calio printing, dying and bleaching. When Birkacre Wier was built over 100yrs ago, it became impossible for Sea Trout and Salmon to get to their traditional spawning grounds in the Pennine foothills. The building of the fish pass in 2003 has now rectified this impasse.

used the trail in august after a few wet and windy days, so the entire walk involved walking through mud. although the waterfall was worth seeing and my 14 year - xbox obsessed - teen enjoyed it, it wasn’t too strenuous and most of the up hills were not steep. we found it very easy to get off trail, and we struggled keeping on track, but still easy enough to make our way round and see some lovely views.
