Getting There

A circular pub walk from the Clog and Billycock in Pleasington, near Blackburn, Lancashire. The Clog and Billycock, named in honour of the attire of a former characterful landlord, has been in the village for over 150 years and makes the perfect spot for your post-walk refreshments. Although barely two miles from the centre of Blackburn, the Clog and Billycock is situated in a delightful rural location with superb views across the Ribble Valley to the Bowland Fells. The walking route performs a simple loop around the surrounding countryside, with rolling fields, woodland and one of Lancashire's best viewpoints. Although the walk is relatively easy-going for the most part, there are two steep climbs; the first from Arley Brook in Alum Scar itself and the second as you ascend to the Wainwright Memorial. After the Woodfold Estate there is a short stretch of road walking (around 700 metres), following a stretch of Further Lane with no pavement, so take care of traffic. The remainder of the route follows a mixture of field paths, grass tracks and stone tracks. Some parts of the route are prone to mud after prolonged spells of wet weather, especially on the final section after the Wainwright Memorial. The walk crosses several grass pastures which you will be sharing with cattle. You will need to negotiate several gates, around 15 stiles and one footbridge. Some of the stiles have tight fence surrounds, so dogs would need a lift over, and there is one in double-formation. Allow 2.5 hours.

Pleasington is a small village located about 2 miles west of Blackburn. The walk starts and finishes from The Clog and Billycock on Billinge End Lane, about a mile west from its junction with the A677. The pub has its own car park. Approximate post code BB2 6QB.

The weather has been nice for a couple of days, lovely 20odd degrees today, but the first half was very boggy. The grass is long so I recommend walking boots, even for dew

Just completed with a 3 And 7 year old and they loved it. Soft under foot for much of the way, our boots took a pounding but very enjoyable, with a stunning view to finish off.

Really good walk. Ground hard which was a bit tricky at times. Watch the young cows they neatly had us in the field. I was lucky to get over the style before they reached us. Other cows the the last fields were fine with us walking through. But we did it very fast. Enjoyed the walk with some great views.

Nice circular walk in pleasant surroundings and nice countryside. As a large portion of the walk across fields the going was rather wet and boggy so a little difficult at times. Good idea to wear gaitors especially if you intend finishing off the walk with a nice meal in the Clog & Billycock.

Superb walk, fabulous views, really enjoyed it today. Just a note that at the beginning the notes say go over two stiles in quick succession. There is only one stile then you make your way down to the bottom right corner of the field. The rest was very clear.
