Getting There

A circular walk through the spectacular Ribble Valley in the Forest of Bowland. The walk starts and finishes on Avenue Road. The route takes in the riverside path alongside the Ribble plus the surrounding fields and tracks. There are beautiful views throughout as you take in this peaceful and tranquil setting which, some speculate, could have been Tolkien's inspiration for the Shires in the Lord of the Rings novels. There are several climbs and descents throughout and the paths are generally grass paths and tracks across pastures which can be very muddy after rain. You will need to negotiate several kissing gates plus six stiles, all of which are fairly enclosed so dogs may need a lift over. Several of the pastures you cross are likely to be holding cattle and/or sheep so take care with dogs. Approximate time 2 to 2.5 hours.

Hurst Green is located on the B6243 Whalley Road between Clitheroe and Longridge in Lancashire. The walk starts and finishes on Avenue Road. Parking is available at the parish hall on Avenue Road, or you can park (with respect for local residents) on Avenue Road itself. Once you've parked, make your way to the public toilets on Avenue Road to start the walk (these are fairly close to the junction with the main Whalley Road). Approximate post code BB7 9QB.

We went in June. It rained allllllll day, none stop, didn't ruin the walk. Very pretty. Looking forward to an Autumn stroll to see the colours.

We did this walk during lockdown. The weather was amazing which made the walk even better. We only came across a few people but we were never close to them. The river looked fantastic and not as rough as it was back in February. Easy map to follow which was what we needed. The ground was solid and not muddy at all. Will definitely do this walk with my children when lockdown is over. I did this walk again with my children and they enjoyed it. Gamers very helpful when I was off track and directed us to the correct field. Lovely weather on both occasions.

great walk and we ambled and is it in about 2 hrs on a damp morning . The section towards Stoneyhurst College was excessively muddy 'smooshy' (according to my daughter) and we should have stayed in the road 6423 back. Highly recommend
