Getting There

A circular walk near Darwen in Lancashire, taking in the beautiful moorland and woodland areas that sit between the two reservoirs, Wayoh Reservoir and Turton and Entwistle Reservoir. The walk begins by climbing into the moorland where you will have fabulous views, before descending through Chapeltown to reach the banks of Wayoh Reservoir. The pretty waterside paths are lined with dense woodland, the water is home to plenty of wildlife and you will get a great view of the Armsgrove Viaduct. The final stretch takes you through the village of Entwistle to return to the banks of Turton and Entwistle Reservoir. The walk has several climbs and descents throughout. Some sections of the paths can be very muddy at times. You will need to negotiate several gates, kissing gates and flights of steps but there are no stiles on route. Most of the paths are enclosed but you will need to cross three sheep pastures plus one large hillside field which may be holding cattle, so take care with dogs. (The cattle can be present when you walk but they may or may not ignore you). Allow 2.5 hours.

The walk starts and finishes at the Entwistle Reservoir pay and display car park. Head south from Darwen on the A666 for about 2 miles and then turn left onto the B6391 Greens Arms Road. Follow this road for 1.5 miles then ignore the first car park on the left (Batridge Barn) and, a bit further along, turn left into Batridge Road. This road will lead you directly to the Entwistle Reservoir car park. The fee is £1.50 for the whole day (as of July 2016). The nearest post code is BL7 0NF.

Off the beaten track and mayhem of Entwistle reservoir. Slightly muddy. Great views at the beginning over to Mamchester. No problems with livestock today. Beautiful autumnal colours. Easy and a lovely ramble. Not for prams!

WalkingGreat!

What a great find, new the reservoir was there but never explored. Easy to find and park. Very dog friendly and lots of paths and trails to wander off along. Muddy and parts of the path around the reservoir are flooded so take appropriate footwear, ankle boots or wellies after all this rain. The Strawberry Duck pub is a cracking incentive to keep going and it’s right next to the station. Will definitely be revisiting to explore more of the paths and trails, will definitely bring the mountain bikes as well.

Bit muddy given recent rain fall but easy walk for me and the dog. Keep your dog on a lead as you go through farmland with livestock.

Despite an overcast day with the occasional light rain this was a beautiful walk with varied scenery and lots of off-leash time for the dog! Despite Covid-19 situation was able to grab a delicious sandwich and coffee to go from the fabulous Strawberry Duck pub at the end of our walk!

An enjoyable walk with some really nice views of the reservoir. We stopped at Holdens in Edgeworth for dinner and then continued our walk. Be mindful of the car park as it seems as though the ticket machine isn’t working. It also doesn’t accept card (for if it does work)

Lovely walk with some great views - easy to follow. A nice variety of paths across fields, down tracks and alongside the reservoirs; a small amount of time on quiet roads. A little soggy in places (there had been a lot of rain the week before) but all negotiable. Lots of off lead areas for the dog. Nice meal at the Strawbury Duck (dog friendly!) before heading back to the car.

Lovely walk. Walked round entwistle reservoir first then did walk. car park was busy and road leading down to it narrow so got bit hectic with cars trying to pass, but well worth it.😃

Loved this walk with its views of St Anne's Church and the reservoirs. If you have the time, the Strawbury Duck is worth a rest stop after the climb up to Entwistle station.
