Getting There

A circular pub walk from the Alford Arms in Frithsden, Hertfordshire. The Alford Arms has a wonderful philosophy of children, dogs and muddy boots welcome. You'll find a friendly atmosphere, good local ales, carefully chosen wines and delicious meals. The walking route takes in the surrounding rolling hills of the Chilterns, with ancient lanes, pastures, woodlands and water meadows. There are lovely views throughout and the chance to see plenty of wildlife. The route includes several long and steady climbs and descents, plus a couple of steeper sections. The paths are firm in the main, but can get muddy after rain or in winter and the water meadows (as the name suggests) can be quite marshy so good boots are a must. There are no stiles on route, just some kissing gates to negotiate. There are a couple of short sections of walking along the country lanes so take care of traffic at these points. Two of the fields you cross may be holding cattle and/or sheep so take care with dogs. Approximate time 1.5 to 2 hours.

Frithsden is located about two miles north of Berkhamsted in Hertfordshire. The walk starts and finishes from the Alford Arms which has its own small car park. There is also a small amount of street-side parking nearby but this fills up quickly at peak times. To make life easier for the pub, please try to arrive in the morning to complete the walk while the pub is closed, finishing just in time for a well-earned lunch as the pub opens. Approximate post code HP1 3DD.

BEST so far, it had ALL.. ideal length (family with kiddos), friendly profile, mystery and thrill (haunted part), various nature, a bit of spiritual stuff (church@graveyard), water fun (spot by the brook ideal for cooling for feet), postcard landscape and cute pub.

Easy to follow route and a good workout. There are a few steep parts in the first half and narrow shady paths, second half is more scenic across fields with nice views. There is street parking outside the Alford Arms Pub and picnic tables to recover with a pint after!

Really interesting walk. Great views. And so local to Hemel Hempstead. Look up the stories about Devils Bridge before you go...

The walk was superb, with a great pub included. But I wanted to especially comment on the walk directions an narrative- second to none.

Varied trail across fields, through woods, and along lanes. A few short sharp hills and some nice views. The end isn't ideal - it is on a twisty road with blind corners, but other than that it's great.

Very nice except for the verge jumping for the last 500m But the rest of it was amazing - hence 4 stars

Lovely walk, excellent directions and fabulous food in the Alford Arms. Really enjoyed ourselves despite intermittent showers.

Good walk. note that the last stretch of footpath before you hit the roads to the end is very overgrown with nettles

Great walk! First time using ifootpath found the instructions very good and informative hard to get lost once you find out there are more instructions when you scroll down (my mistake). Decided to have lunch at the Alford arms first which was excellent! Then walk the lunch off. The only issue we found was towards the end of the walk, the path round the horses paddock was very overgrown with stingy nettles, which was not good for walkers wearing shorts, but other than that highly recommended!!! We all had the roast beef!!

Great walk with relatively easy climbs. Our daughter of 13 said it was the best walk she had ever been on. Partly as we saw 3 separate lots of Alpacas.
