Getting There

A circular pub walk from the Leather Bottle in Mattingley, Hampshire. The Leather Bottle is a classic old village inn, providing relaxed comfortable surroundings for refreshments before or after your walk. The walking route is really delightful with chance to enjoy a pretty avenue lined with lime trees, open fields, the banks of the beautiful River Whitewater and a spectacular timber-framed church. The walk has just a few gentle climbs and descents throughout and some of the field paths can be quite muddy after rain and in winter. There are several stiles along the way and these could be a challenge for less able people as some are quite tall and others are a little rickety and unstable. All the stiles do, however, have open fence surrounds which should be easy for most dogs to pass through. There are a couple of sections of road walking so take care of any traffic. A couple of the fields are large open pastures and, there’s a chance you may come across cattle here. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours.

Mattingley is situated on the B3349 north of Hook. The walk starts and finishes at the Leather Bottle which is on the main B3349 road, on the right hand side if you are travelling north. There is a large car park alongside the pub. Approximate post code RG27 8JU.

Lovely walk, quite flat through beautiful fields and woodland. Lots of animals in the fields which meant we needed to keep our dog on the lead more often than not (hence 3 stars not 4) but still love seeing the horses/cows/alpacas! Love the bits along the river and so many wild flowers - the sunshine helped! Downside was the small section along the main road at the end but this wasn’t for very long. Bonus pint at the pub which has just reopened as a reward! Not too taxing, but enough to stretch your legs and feel like you’ve done some exercise.

lovely little walk for old and young alike. takes you down a few paths that look private but aren't. well signed and lovely views of both scenery and a few grand houses too. make sure to take the small detour to the Diply Mill Bridge.

A pleasant walk mainly on footpaths and fields. It had rained in the previous few days and the ground was quite soft underfoot in places. I am not sure my boots will be the same again. The views were pretty rather than spectacular, but the highlight was the beautiful church at Mattingley. It was open when I went and is worth a look inside

Really lovely trail with very easy instructions. We walked it with our children (7 and 4) with only having to carry the 4yr old from time to time. Also note with regards to previous review and the gun club. The sign on trail advises to signal to club and they'll blow whistle and cease firing. That work perfectly and we simply crossed the field.

Great day to do this walk and the pub at the end. Good walking well marked and described, a little muddy in places but not a big deal. The highlights of the walk is the avenue of lime trees at the beginning and the very pretty half timbered church just before the end.

Unfortunately abandoned walk as camberley clay shooting club were set up across the footpath (red flags flying etc) and no alternative route available. Avoid Sunday mornings when shooting is on I guess.

Really enjoyed the varied scenery. Mattingly church is probably the nicest little church I've seen in Surrey. The finish at the leather bottle is good too with nice food and beer
