Getting There

A circular walk from the pretty village of Kingsclere in Hampshire. The route heads south, exploring the beautiful rolling Hampshire Downs with peaceful tracks and beautiful views throughout. Halfway round, the walk leads you through the idyllic village of Hannington with its pretty village green and imposing church. The route has several climbs and descents throughout. The vast majority of the route follows bridleway tracks, some tarmac or stone which give a firm walking surface, but also some grass stretches which can get muddy and slippery. There is one stretch of footpath which passes through a pasture, sometimes holding cattle, although this can be avoided if you prefer. You will need to negotiate a few staggered barriers, a couple of flights of steps, some bridle gates plus three kissing gates, but there are no stiles on route. Some of the tracks have sheep pastures alongside, enclosed with electric fencing so take care with children and dogs. Allow 3 hours.

Kingsclere is located just south of the A339, about 8 miles north west of Basingstoke. The walk starts and finishes at the Anchor Road car park (near to St Mary's Church), a free car park for about 20 cars. If this is full, there is some street parking available further along Anchor Road, but please park with respect for the residents. Approximate post code RG20 5NE.

I regularly walk this trail sometimes taking detours around different routes. Some parts are very hilly and can be challenging for some. Beautiful scenery across the gorgeous Hampshire countryside. Wellies are a must.

This route is very muddy in the Autumn/Winter. It’s definitely not easy and should be marked Moderate as some of the hills both up and down are challenging. A walking pole or 2 is highly recommended especially for the down hills on the last leg from Hannington back to Kingsclere. Great views though.

Great walk today. Lots of mud! Fun! Also, be aware, we had to walk through a herd of cows.

WalkingGreat!

Potentially the best walk on this app, I really enjoyed it in very challenging conditions, it was windy and raining, the views were stunning, be prepared for hills and slightly challenging gradient.

Fabulous views, quite a few uphill bits, I'd agree with grading it as moderate rather than easy! Really good directions, will do it again!

An excellent walk with some great scenery. The ridge above Horse Gallops is particularly good with great views. There are a few sections walking on roads however they are very quiet and I didn't see any cars when I did the walk today. I would probably say that this walk is more 'moderate' than 'easy', mainly due to the number of ups and downs.

Excellent walk over the downs to Kingsclere using byways, bridleways and one or two path. Lovely rolling Hampshire countryside with lots of ups and downs. Be prepared for the climb off the gallops through the woods just below the Hannington transmitter it is very steep and likely to be very slippy in the winter, it is steady but continuous.

Lovely village of Kingsclere where the walk starts. The hike is really great & goes thru mainly quiet paths & rarely used country lanes & roads. Some brilliant district views along the way. Some shade along the way with undulating hills make this a perfect 2hr 15 walk.

It’s was a fantastic and scenic route. I would say it’s more a moderate walk due to the undulating hills.

Very clear instructions, accurate about the difficulty level. Lovely views and lots of things to see on the way - plenty of horses! Clear paths and a mix of terrain, with a lovely halfway stop at Hannington. Would recommend!
