Getting There

A circular walk from the village of Burghclere in Hampshire. This is a particularly peaceful walk, given its proximity to the A34 and the town of Newbury. The route follows bridleway tracks through woodland, plus paths across fields and you will also discover a few beautiful estates along the way. The walk has several climbs and descents throughout, but there are no steep sections. About a third of the route is on surfaced pavements and tracks, with the remainder following unmade paths, some stretches of which can get muddy at times. There is one short stretch along a quiet road. You will need to negotiate several gates plus one stile (that has a gap underneath that most dogs should be able to fit through). Most of the route is on enclosed paths, but you will need to cross two grass pastures. There may be grazing cattle in these pastures in the warmer months. Allow 2 hours.

Burghclere village is located in Hampshire, close to the Berkshire border and about 4 miles south of Newbury. The walk starts and finishes in the free car park for Burghclere Sports Club and the Recreation Ground which is on Harts Lane. Approximate post code RG20 9JD.

Enjoyable and very easy walk. Not muddy at all and apart from a few paths being quite narrow, most of it was very accessible.

Nice walk, a bit muddy in places but to be expected after a couple of days of rain. There was a part where you had to cross a field of cows but they weren’t threatening at all despite having calves, met a farmer on the way over and he said they were old enough so it was safe. A nice bit of incline, a cute bridge with a model heron that fooled us. A pleasant walk with hardly anyone around.

Great walk crossing one or two roads. Mostly farmland and forest so a bit muddy after rain.

Woodland and farmland trail with a little paved road walking. Very peaceful walk some parts a little overgrown and path not clear. You may walk through fields of grazing cattle, we saw Holstein Friesian.

First to Review

We did this walk today (March 1) and it was absolutely superb. It is a good mix of tracks, field paths with lots of open views and attractive woodland. We saw wild daffodils and snowdrops in the wooded sections. There was some mud but it was easily negotiable. The instructions were very clear and easy to follow. Many thanks!
