Getting There

A circular walk in the New Forest in Hampshire passing through heathland on the outskirts of the forest to the Canadian War Memorial and back again. Walking in the New Forest comes with both rewards and some hazards. The challenges can include bogs, fords, unmarked paths, remoteness (with patchy phone service) and some congested roads, but for the keen walker the attractions of the forest include the freedom to wander for miles in unspoiled countryside, the richness and diversity of the wildlife, and the sense of timelessness and peace. All this more than outweighs its wild side. However, if you are not familiar with the mainly unmarked routes, it is easy to get lost, so make sure you go out with a fully charged phone with GPS and a stout pair of walking boots. Acres Down Forest, with its easy-to-follow routes and wide gravel paths, represents the forest at its most civilized. Even on the surrounding heathland, the paths are generally clear enough to follow and there is a refreshing lack of New Forest bogs. There are no stiles or other obstacles to negotiate but you will go through a couple of gates and over two bridges. Allow 2.5 hours.

Acres Down lies on the southern side of the A31. Take signs for Minstead and Newtown. Once you are on the other side of Newtown, head across Forest Road (the road between Stoney Cross and Emery Down). The small access lane opposite is signed Acres Down ¼ mile. Take this lane and cross over the ford. You will pass Acres Down farm shop and tea room on your left, then you need to fork right to follow the lane to the entrance gate for Acres Down - the car park is on the left. Approximate post code SO43 7GE. If this car park is full, there is further free parking back at Acres Down farm but make sure you don't block any routes used by farm vehicles.

Perfect mix of uphill/downhill and very easy to follow (except one waypoint that sent us a bit off track - but it’s easy enough to find a way back as there’s hundreds of trails!)

I recorded about 0.5km in after I went off course. It was easy to get back on course though. Saw lot of ponies and had a nice, quiet and scenic walk.

Ample parking at Acre Down, extended the walk so dogs could have a swim at the ponds at Andrews Mare car park. Would recommend this walk

We did it in 2 hours without kids. Mix of sun and shaded walk. Great views from the tops and the bench seat gave a great view.

A very good walk that alternates forest and heathland. Some parts of the forest are really gorgeous, and a few lovely view points. We saw very few people, and enjoyed the walk very much.

Nice walk - some open parts and some foresty. Quite a bit on gravelled paths.

Beautiful area, relaxed trail. Probably best to avoid in rainy winter months to avoid trails getting ruined.

Very popular area for walking so if you prefer quieter walks this is not for you. Walked through some forest areas but a great deal was gravelled walkways. Route directions are bot the best, you could easily get lost, do make sure your GPS can get a signal.
