This walk starts from the car park of Dunham Massey is flat in nature taking in Cheshire fields and woodlands and towns and villages. The current Dunham Massey Hall was built in 1730 by George Boot - 2nd Earl of Warrington. Dunham Park is a 3,000 acre deer park and it and the hall are in the hands of the National Trust. The Bollin Way is a 25 mile path shadowing the Bollin River which rises in the Macclesfield Forest near the Cat and Fiddle on the border between Greater Manchester and East Cheshire. The former railway to Lymm is now part of the Trans Pennine Trail which starts in Southport and ends at Hornsea, it covers 207 miles. It was devised in 1989 and officially opened in 2001 following expenditure of £30m. and required the co-operation of 26 local authorities. The Bridgewater Canal connects Runcorn, Manchester and Leigh and was constructed to transport coal from Worsley. Together with the Macclesfield Canal and the Trent and Mersey Canal the Bridgewater Canal is known as the Cheshire Ring. Lymm is a large village in a conservation area with the added advantage of having no major trunk roads through its heart. Lymm Dam is the name of the lake and was created in 1824 during the construction of a turnpike road now the A56. The name of the pub ‘Swan with Two Nicks’ is derived from the markings given to swans during ‘swan upping’ in July. Under a 15c Royal Charter there were two Liveried Companies - The Vintners and The Dyers who counted the swans on behalf of the Crown: one nick for Dyers’ and two for Vintners.

WalkingGreat!

Good trail but it was not 3 hours especially with 2 boys in tow. We were out on this trail for about 5 1/2 hours we did stop and have lunch and did a couple of minor detours.

WalkingMuddy

This is a great walk even In The rain. Easy to follow pathways some are a little muddy but still not a problem. Only a couple of small inclines around the dam but apart from that it’s a nice flat walk. Ideal for someone wanting a little more distance but not to hilly. Theres plenty wildlife to see on this walk and at the dam there’s a van that has lovely coffee or other refreshments. In total this walk took me just over 3hrs to complete at a steady pace. I will definitely do this one again but in nicer weather.

Nice trail, well into autumn now so not as pleasant as it would be in the summer, quite exposed in parts if there’s a strong wind. Word of warning you can’t park in deer park without pre booking on the national trust website the day before. We were caught out, thankfully there was parking in the village.

A relatively flat walk with a great mixture of scenery. One for all the family.

Can be very muddy in parts but a good mix of scenery along the canals with the addition of Lymm Damn and Dunham Massey.
