Getting There

A circular walk, close to Colchester in Essex. The route allows you to discover a most unusual corner of Essex - hills, grassland, and grazing livestock. You might think you were in Devon! This circular walk, which is three miles to the north of Colchester, includes magnificent views, a delightful old church and hamlet, a lovely riverside mill house and weir, woodland, rolling grassland and the site of a Tudor hunting lodge. The walk involves some steep, but short, climbs and should take about 1.5 to 2 hours. One short section is almost always wet and muddy. There are three remaining stiles, but most have been replaced by gates. There are a few hundred yards of walking on tarmac lanes, but these are all usually quiet. Both sheep and cattle are likely to be encountered. One short section of the route follows a public right of way across a private garden and you may encounter dogs here.

The walk starts from a large lay-by on the B1508, approximately 1km north of the Wormingford Crown, and 100 metres north of the junction with Sandy Lane. The lay-by is on the outside of a sharp bend and has a prominent double metal farm gate (shown in the image for Section 1). The nearest postcode is CO6 3AA. Chambers bus routes 753 and 754 pass by.

WalkingGreat!

Loved this walk - my dog was safe off the lead and the map guide was accurate so I knew when to clip her on. Very pretty. Be prepared to venture through cow fields - best wear long trousers as nettle growth was high in some areas but absolutely worth it

An inspired route with lots of different terrain, beautiful landscapes and places of interest. Some of the paths are a little over grown which added to the adventure. Dog walkers you will like this one too.

A very pretty walk, great views and well worth the effort. Some very nice houses to look at. Beware of the loose Labrador at Mill House as the footpath goes right trough the garden of the house - the dog was not best pleased !

Pleasant walk can be easily shortened by taking a cut across near the church.

A lovely walk with beautiful views and the directions were easy to follow.. We walked in early summer and there were lots of nettles in places which we had to clear at times before we could pass. There were plenty of cows in two fields. We were with our dog and the cows did rapidly approach in one, slowly in the other - so if with your dog in particular make sure you know how to be around cows else it might feel a bit hairy! Overall it was an enjoyable walk through the Stour valley with various pretty hill and field views throughout.

Really enjoyed this walk. Lovely autumnal afternoon. Stopped in at the church and met the bell ringer captain who let us have a go at ringing the church bell. Great mix of terrain and splendid views.
