Getting There

A circular pub walk from the Old Windmill in South Hanningfield, Essex. The Old Windmill has been serving food and ale since 1799 and today, with a beautiful sympathetic refurbishment, it really is a gem of a pub. The walking route explores the local countryside, a peaceful journey through arable fields and ancient lanes, visiting the pretty local church on route. The paths follow sections of arable fields and grass meadows, all of which can be very muddy in the winter and after periods of rain, so the walk is one best enjoyed in the warmer months. The paths in a couple of places can also be a little overgrown so good stout footwear and full length trousers are recommended (unless you're immune to nettles!). The route has several climbs and descents throughout and there are a couple of sections of road walking so take care of traffic. There are a few gates plus six stiles, some of which are fully enclosed with wire fencing so dogs may need a lift over. Depending on the condition underfoot, allow 1 to 2 hours.

South Hanningfield is situated between Basildon and Chelmsford, just off the A130. The walk starts and finishes at the Old Windmill pub which is on South Hanningfield Road. The pub has a large car park alongside. Approximate post code CM3 8HJ.

A good walk to begin with but the Romans Farm entry was a locked gate that seemed to lead into private property, also was very overgrown and almost impossible to navigate through the nettles to find your way onto the end bit of the path near the church.

Lovely walk but final sleeper bridge very difficult to get beyond. Unclear path but worth persevering!

Lovely walk with the dog, couldn't see the footpath sign at Roman's farm but went through the gate and the lady was very helpful and told us where the path went, a bit overgrown and some stingers on that bit but didn't spoil it. Some lovely countryside views.

A pretty country walk. Some bits a bit overgrown by nettles- long trousers recommend. The lake you can’t really see on this walk. The dog can be loose on most roads. One bit the sign for public path disappeared into the Bush and we needed to open a gate that looked quite private. We asked and found the way. Have fun!

Good walk and really pretty views. Wear long trousers as lots of stinging nettles in places.

Was a nice walk, a bit on the muddy side but is to be expected due to the amount of rain we have had.

Excellent little walk. Always polite to mention to the pub that you'll be coming there for lunch or something to eat if you park there. the walk took us about an hour and 40 minutes. Over 60 but fit ish. I recommend the Windmill for food and drink. I suggest to walk it clockwise as the directions are not easy when you reach South Hanningfield Road if you walk anticlockwise.

A nice trail but a couple of sections very overgrown with nettles. Hoped for a better view of the reservoir too. Pleasant walk but not high on list to walk again.

We done the Old Windmill South walk today, weather was cold but clear, ground was very frosty in the grassy areas, but made it all look very different to last time we done it, the dogs ended up to dirty to go in the pub, so they stayed in the car to dry off, while we went in, pub was good as usual - would thoroughly recommend.
