Getting There

A circular pub walk from The Anchor in the village of Danbury, Essex. The Anchor is the epitome of an English Country Inn, boasting beautiful traditional beams and a warm welcoming atmosphere, the perfect setting for post-walk refreshments. The walking route explores the network of beautiful commons, woodlands and heaths that surround the village. Along the way there are captivating views and plenty of wildlife to discover. You will enjoy bluebells in the spring, birdsong in the summer, rich woodland colors in the autumn and frost-covered heather in the winter months. The walk includes several climbs and descents throughout. The woodland stretches can be very muddy after rain and in the wetter months, so good boots are a must (and wellies with grips are recommended in winter). There are a few stretches along village lanes, so take care of traffic at these points. You will need to negotiate some kissing gates, but there are no stiles and no livestock on route. The commons have a complex network of multiple paths so follow the app for navigation. Allow 2.5 hours.

Danbury is located 5 miles east of Chelmsford in Essex. The walk starts and finishes at The Anchor, at the eastern edge of the village, on Runsell Green. If you are coming by pubic transport, there are bus stops on the A414 close to Runsell Green. If you are coming by car, the pub has its own large car park. Approximate post code CM3 4QZ.

HikingGreat!

Hilly in places but mostly shaded on a hot sunny day. A sneaky half pint was had at the Generals Arm just before Parsonage Lane!

Great walk on a warm day with loads of shade in the many woodlands. Directions were really easy to follow and terrain was dry and easy to negotiate. We really enjoyed ourselves and had a lovely meal at the Anchor where they were well organised and welcoming.

Running

Extremely steep in some sections for trail runners and the recorded route is a little off track in places.. so marked down by one star as confusing at times. However this is a beautiful route and we'll probably do this one again in future.

Really good walk. Some up and down hill bits but not too steep. Highly reccomend the detour to the view point!

We've loved in Danbury all our lives and it showed us places we'd never been. Some nice views and instructions easy to follow. Will definitely do again.

Some of the paths are extremely muddy and slippery in places, but you can easily track round most of the worst places. The views are lovely and there’s plenty to see along the way. I’ll definitely come back and see the area in spring/summer.

Good walk, enjoyable, easy to follow and not to strenuous but hilly in places. Worth noting it passes The General Arms Pub at the half way point.

Lovely walk through wood and heathland. Great directions and easy to follow. Definitely worth taking the slight detour as per directions the view is amazing. It does have some fairly steep inclines and poor hubby with his dodgy knees benefitted from having his walking poles. Nice safe walk for my dog as well, only a short distance on roads

Lovely little walk. Was great with the dog as much of it was shaded. Some road walking but mainly on quite roads so not too much of a problem. Would Definitely do again.

We really enjoyed this walk on a fresh April morning. The bluebells were beginning to flower and the floor of the woods were strewn with wood anemone. Strenuous in parts but easily manageable in a couple of hours.
