South Woodham Ferrers - Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome is a 8.3 mile loop trail located near South Woodham Ferrers, Essex, England that features a river and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, running, and nature trips.
Not a well signed path but quite well-worn, making it fairly easy to follow. Quite a bit of open land but there is some nice shady woodland stretches too, primarily on the higher ground.
Nice walk, mixture of river, landscape and wildlife. Very muddy out there in places which you can expect this time of year in December.
The walk is beautiful and easy to follow, but part of it is flooded (see photos) and there is no way around. Wellies needed at the moment!
We left South Woodham Ferrers about 10 a.m today 10th December 2020 and arrived back without stopping and missing the airfield sadly as the footpath was flooded, in about 4 hours. Saw Ruby walking the other way. A lovely walk. however I think it takes longer than as stated on Alltrails description.
pretty muddy this time of year and fields with livestock to watch out for. mostly on footpaths and an easy day walk
Interesting route with a variety of landscapes and views to enjoy along the way.
Great walk, loads of points of interest, the airfield is a hidden gem, make sure you see the memorial. Muddy in parts especially this time of year
This trail starts with some uphill climbs through a small wooded trail then up a country Lane with hardly any traffic, there you walk around some open farmland with good paths. From an elevated position you have some great panoramic views. After crossing a railway line you walk alongside the river crouch with plenty of wildlife and an area of real natural beauty, very highly recommended
Great walk with a variety of terrain. Nice views of the crouch valley from the aerodrome. Perfect pub stop at the Prince of Wales on Stow Maries.
This walk start in a random street which looks very boring, then within no time you are in the countryside. I did it clockwise and started with climbing a bit. A lot of different vegetation. Large open fields, woods, and the beautiful path along the coast. Especially the coast but is pretty. Sometimes you have to cross a very busy road. Dog can be off most parts, except for livestock grazing area. Cows (be aware of bull) and sheep. This gives lovely views. It is definitely recommended, maybe a bit on the long side, but you can always do only the coastal bit bit plenty of side walks instead. Have fun
