Getting There

This pleasantly pastoral lollipop shaped walk is unusual for this area of Suffolk - it has some ups and downs, and much of it is over (or alongside) grass. It runs from the attractive, chocolate-boxy village of Nayland, six miles north of Colchester. Much of it tries to persuade you that you are somewhere in the south west - although the sun shines more often here. It offers good views, attractive woodland, and rolling countryside. There is even a tiny hidden valley. The pretty village of Nayland is well worth exploring, either before or after the walk. High Street, Bear Street and the river side are the most attractive areas. The route involves tracks, pasture, arable land and road walking. Three quarters of a mile is either through the village of Nayland or along quiet public lanes. Boots are only necessary in winter and after periods of rain. There are three stiles on the walk, one of which requires a good 'pull up'. Normally both cattle and sheep should be anticipated. Two hours should be sufficient to complete the walk.

Nayland is located about six miles north of Colchester. There is parking on the old market place, on High Street, Nayland, CO6 4HU. If this area is full (more than likely), there is street parking on both High Street and Bear Street. Parking is also possible on a secluded residential service road on the left (north) side of Stoke Road, 200 metres beyond the start of Gravel Hill. Nayland is served by Chambers 84 bus, between Colchester, Sudbury and Bury St Edmunds.

Lovely today. Nice big hills which could be a bit challenging in hotter weather but we managed! Lots of nettles and flying bugs around, everything was alive today. Nice and isolated which is just what we needed.

Muddy

A very enjoyable route. Walked in December and as expected we had muddy paths. Look forward to walking route again in summer.

great walk today, with some muddy parts, but mostly great conditions. A little over grown on a couple of stretches of foot paths. Some great scenery
