An interesting circular walk exploring the industrial past of the area around Cromford. A large part of the village was built by Richard Arkwright to house the mill workers for the nearby Cromford Mill which he built in 1771. They were also provided with shops, pubs, chapels and a school. The walk starts on the canal wharf, where the friends of Cromford Canal run boat trips every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday throughout the year. Within the wharf area there was a warehouse, a weighing machine, sawpit, counting houses, stables and a smithy. Many of the old canal buildings can still be seen. The walk takes in a lovely stretch of the canal which was completed in 1794. The walk also takes in a canal aqueduct over the River Derwent and the Leawood Pumphouse, a steam-powered beam engine which operates on some summer weekends and bank holidays. At High Peak Junction you join the High Peak Trail which follows the former Cromford and High Peak Railway. On this walk you will go through two gates, over one stile and negotiate a few wooden steps. The paths are of good quality but the incline can be muddy after wet weather. The incline is pretty steep but is the only uphill section of the walk. Picnic sites are located at the canal wharf, High Peak Junction and Black Rocks. The appropriate map is Ordnance Survey Explorer OL24.

Loved this walk! Loads to stop and look at / boards to read. We walked the opposite way which I preferred as otherwise it would be a bit of a boring ending on the road! Will be doing this one again.

We took this trail on a rather wet and rainy day, We started off passing the Crompton mill where we saw little baby ducks Continuing along the rather surprisingly blue water canal. it flat and very green. After the canal part we went up the black rock passing the old wagon tracks and we could see a farm growing Christmas trees. The trail also took us onto the high peak trail where the views were rather foggy due to the wet weather All in all this trail offers a variety of scenes and is a nice short walk.

Brilliant definitely worth going off the trail to go up the black rocks

What an amazing place! the views from the top of black rocks are beautiful! not an easy climb though! however, there are other trails which are flat with equally as lovely views.

Nice varied walk with great views. Lovely canal side stroll which leads on to High Peak Junction. Yes, the hill was steep but well worth it. Black Rocks also promises great views. Thank you All Trails for providing a useful and easy to follow GPS Map. I'm actually a vlogger and recorded this walk if you would like to check it out the link is below. One of my favourite short peak District walks, Only variation is I park in the black rocks car park then walk down the hill through Cromford to get the boring bit out of the way :) on returning I always climb up the black Rocks and the view is magnificent

Very steep climb whichever way you take this trail. I would suggest starting at Cromford Mill and walking the canal leg first and end up walking down The Hill in Cromford as the road provides little shelter on a hot day. Absolutely stunning views though and a little piece of Industrial and Rail history.

This trail is good for hiking or cycling, but there is a long steep incline so I wouldn’t recommend it for anyone who requires accessible walking.
