Getting There

A pleasant circular walk along three interconnecting limestone dales starting from the village of Hartington. Biggin Dale, the first on the walk, is predominantly dry except for the latter part, where a stream appears and, for some distance, competes with the footpath. This is a very pretty dale and is also part of the Derbyshire Dales National Nature Reserve. Wolfscote Dale, the second on the walk, has high rocky cliffs and the River Dove flows between its steep banks. The third dale is Beresford Dale a much gentler tree lined dale, along which the River Dove continues to flow. Hartington is a major tourist village, set in the Dove Valley, with a duck pond on the green, a cheese shop, several pubs, a post office and general store. On the walk you will pass over sections of farmland so please take care with dogs as the fields may contain livestock. There are several gates on route and various types of stile including wall and squeezer. A few places may be muddy especially after wet weather and some sections are rocky under foot, so good stout footwear is recommended. From the middle to the end of Biggin Dale the footpath in places competes with a stream so some care is needed to negotiate these wet sections. Public toilets are located at the start of the walk and refreshments are available in the village.

Hartington is nine miles south-east of Buxton and 12 miles north of Ashbourne, just off the A515 Buxton-Ashbourne road. From Buxton: take the A515 towards Ashbourne. Then take the B5054 on the right to Hartington. From Ashbourne: take the A515 towards Buxton and after about 12 miles turn left onto the B5054 to Hartington. There is some street parking within the village centre, and a pay and display car park on Mill Lane. Approximate post code SK17 0AN.

Really beautiful walk, we did it backwards which I would recommend although it does mean the climb is towards the end of your walk. Bare in mind you will definitely need waterproof shoes and a lot of the trail (maybe half) is extremely rocky too. Would totally recommend, lots of places to explore, maybe take a camera!

Best walk yet. Went left around the loop. Valleys caves rivers and great views. Long steady walk not too difficult.

Very nice walk. Fairly flat with the walk along the Dove the highlight as always. Completed walk in middle of September . Stream was not present or trail muddy so an easy walk and a good way to spend three hours
