Getting There

Originally described by Alfred Wainwright in his 1973 book A Coast to Coast Walk, this hike covers 192 miles from Saint Bees and the Irish Sea to Robin Hood's Bay and the North Sea. It is customary to dip your boot in the water at each end. The walk goes through three major National Parks: the Lake District National Park, the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and the North York Moors National Park. Despite being an unofficial route that has relatively few signposts, this through hike is one of the most popular in the UK. Dent, High Stile, Helm Crag (optional), Helvellyn and St Sunday Crag, Kidsty Pike, Nine Standards Rigg/Hartley Fell, Carlton Bank, Cringle Moor/High Blakey Moor/Glaisdale Moor, and Urra Moor are hiked while on this trail. A list of route segments can be found here: https://www.alltrails.com/lists/coast-to-coast-walk-northern-england

We've done it both directions. East to West is fun because you meet so many people.

The Coast to Coast Trail is not an "official" trail. It is poorly marked in many sections, and portions are in rough condition. It is, however, beautiful with some outstanding places to experience.

Hiking

This trail has everything you want in a hike: mountains, meadows, forest, wildlife, birds, English villages, and more. We did it in 12 days and stayed in B&Bs. This trek is not easy, the Lake District does have steep inclines where a few places are a scramble. If it's raining and slick it could get scary... when there is not a steep incline/decline it's a 20+ mile slog of a day. Worth it, but I would say it's a difficult hike as opposed to a moderate.
