We recommend this walk to pretty much anyone who's reasonably fit and up for a very tiny bit of scrambling. Starting with the waterfalls up Church Beck you pass over moorland, through industrial heritage, to the secluded beauty (even if it's busy) of Low Tarn. From there it's a steep but simple scramble to the top, for fantastic views. Dropping to Goat's Hause is mostly straightforward (apart from the very last bit which is easy scrambling again). From there in bad weather or if tired you can head down past Goat's Tarn for a shorter route home with no more climbing - but who can resist the call of Dow Crag? It looks much scarier than it really is, with a nice broad ridge along to the next two small peaks, before a steep drop to the Walna Scar Road. And from there it's a longish but simple stroll back into town, with lovely views once again, and no re-crossing your route until you get back to the Sun Hotel in town. Absolutely brilliant!
Tough climb to the top starting out from near Coniston Lake. Long descent back down. Great views and lots to look at
I like it - good length. Up the first 1,5 hours and then it’s just nice
This was a great walk but the distance isn’t very accurate - we followed the route exactly but we actually walked 11 miles which is 17km. It a good walk for all abilities and we had some great views from the top and the weather was dry but cold when we walked. I wouldn’t say it was hard as there wasn’t much technical ability but the slog is long!
Gotta be one of the top 3 trails to do in the Lakes. The trail is super easy to navigate, starting with a steady climb up to the old coniston railway and Low Water. From the summit of Old Man, the 360 views are breathtaking taking in Morecambe Bay and various other famous fell peaks. We then added on a slight detour to Brim Fell before scrambling up and along Dow Crag with a relatively easy descent along Walna Scar to a pub bench in the sun.
Quite challenging way up if you are a beginner, but incredibly rewarding views when you are up there! Getting much easier after you reach the old man’s peak. Definitely recommend! Enjoy the hike!
Beautiful trail!! We were lucky to have a warm, sunny & clear day too. Also the trail is easy to follow all the way.
