Skiddaw via Carl Side is a 9.6 mile loop trail located near Keswick, Cumbria, England that offers the chance to see wildlife and is rated as difficult. The trail offers a number of activity options.
Skiddaw, because it is isolated from others around, and the fact that it is only slightly less in height than Scafell Pike, shows its massive size in almost all directions. Nowhere is this more so than when seen across Derwent Water from Nichol End. This route starts from Millbeck on the Underskiddaw Road. It is both steep and unremitting to White Stones. It then eases slightly through heather to Carl Side. After a slight depression it is again steep on loose slate to the summit ridge which is half mile long with the trig point at the northern end. The return is via Skiddaw Little Man, Lesser Man and Lonscale Fell. After crossing the tourist path it is on grass not well trodden which just goes to show how much less popular is Lonscale Fell. Continue beyond the cairn to East Peak with views over the Glenderaterra Valley to Blease Fell. For an easy return follow the line of Lonscale Crags south-west down the grassy slope.
quality. went up in the dark, setting off around 05.30am. sat at the top if skiddaw and watched the sun come up till my phone and fingers froze. bit different with most of the snow gone. Full route complete. bit skipped was frozen phone.
We got lost up the valley with an attempted short cut! Part of the fun I guess. Would definitely reckoned this counter clockwise as Skiddaw down via carl side was extremely steep! Wouldn’t like to walk up that way
Parked in Applethwaite in a lay by, once off road, route was steep for the first few km via Carl Side before levelling out briefly before the final ascent to Skiddaw which was challenging, loose slate and steep, but we had good conditions. Overall a great trail and views.
We parked at Underskiddaw Car Park (would advise getting there early) where we started the trail by getting the section of road out the way and finished with a friendly coffee van. The trail uphill is very steep ALL the way to the summit of Skiddaw with amazing views all around to push you through. The descent from Lonscale Fell requires a bit of careful attention paid to the map, and again is steep, but follows a bunch of streams and waterfalls. Taking our time with photos we clocked just over 6hours.
