This is a varied route starting from Keswick and taking in Friar's Crag, Derwent Water shore, Ashness Bridge, High Seat, Bleaberry Fell and Walla Crag. The only 'soft' areas are the traverse from High Seat to Bleaberry Fell. The route used to be a case of keeping by the wire fence but a more circuitous route follows around the various knolls and 'wet places' to the west and is to be preferred. The best period of all would be after a number of nights of frost. The other 'soft' area is that upon the approach to Walla Crag above Cat Gill. All other paths are excellently constructed, some on a firm bed of stone. The tops visited are of moderate height and afford good views to the higher ground of the Helvellyn group and the North Western fells of Crag Fell and Grisedale Pike as well as Blencathra and Skiddaw. Derwent Water is home to Britain's rarest fish - the Vendace - a surveyor from the last Ice Age. Derwent Island is the only inhabited island and is owned by the N.T. It was once the home of Joseph Pocklington, an eccentric who used to challenge the townspeople of Keswick to attack the island whilst he shot at them with his cannons. The craggy headland of Friar's Crag is said to be the launch point for monks making a pilgrimage to St Herbert's Island. Friar's Crag was given to the N.T. in 1920 as a memorial to Cannon Rawnsley, who was one of the three founders of the National Trust. Just before reaching Ashness Bridge on the Watendlath Road lookout for an unassuming small pillar of stones dedicated to the memory of Robert (Bob) Graham 1889 -1966. If you have ever heard of the 'Bob Graham Round' you will know it is the ultimate endurance test in the Lakedistrict. On 13 -14 June 1932 starting and finishing at the Moot Hall Keswick he traversed 42 Lakeland Peaks within 24 hours. It is a record which stood for 28 years.
