A circular trip around Haweswater Reservoir. The highest lake in the Lake District and completely man made. The aqueduct that runs from here and feeding Manchester with its drinking water 63 mile away is completely gravity fed. More details of this can be seen here. The dam to block the Mardle Beck was completed in 1940 after which the valley was flooded along with the village of Mardale with it. In times of drought the remains of the village can been seen and it's possible to walk the remains of the village. Outlines of the properties remain and a hump back bridge that crossed the beck. It's a circular route with good tracks along the way. Roadside parking at Burnbanks near the now renovated cottages that the construction workers lived in. We stopped for a buttie at the south end overlooking The Rigg. The east shore path was closed off when we went but it seemed a little indistinct in places so taking the road was a better option anyway. It's not busy at all and allows good access to stop at the Haweswater Hotel for a cuppa.

Amazing walk abs great views. Have walked the road path a few times but had never found the full walk around the lake until this time and it was great.

Running

Anti clockwise from Burn Banks. Awesome first half or so. Lost the trail at about 11km and had to head up to the road to finish off. Not ideal ending but all in all great day out. Fantastic scenery all the way round.

Absolutely terrible walk. We walked 4k on the road following the trail on AllTrials. No sign of getting to the reservoir so walked back. Wouldn't recommend unless you like road walking.

We chose this walk thinking it would be a dirt trail around. But once we arrived we parked up in the village there was no signs directing us to the foot path. We walked along the road and there was still no trail route. We managed about 1.3 hours of the hike along the road before we gave up and walked back due to the horrendous conditions and boring road

A tough walk in places but really enjoyed the challenge. we did this with 2 dogs, one 7 year old boxer and a 3 year old pointer both extremely fit and they loved it. The pointer is blind but he still pulled us round. the views are absolutely amazing. took us about 4 hours in total and we kept a good pace. we logged 11.85 miles. The only downside was the Haweswater Hotel was closed to the public, so no pint to keep us going !! highly recommended !
