Great little all the family walk. The area became famous in the early 1800,s by the fact that the landlord of the Fish Inn a Mr Robinson had a very attractive daughter known as the Maid of Buttermere. A number of the famous lakeland poets mentioned her, Wordsworth mentioned her in his poem Prelude, Coldridge wrote an artical in one of the leading London Papers, De Quincy thought she was plain and Robert Southey could not take his eyes off her. In 1987 Melvin Bragg wrote the historical novel the Maid of Buttermere, the story is of romance, mystery and tragedy, it is a rare insight into 1800's social history.

Easy walk but honestly the views all the way around the lake were amazing. We kept stopping to take it all in so took us much longer than it should have. There were really nice small beaches to sit and think, streams, a waterfall and the greenery and foilage was amazing. One of the best walks in england ive done and certainly a highlight of the lake district. It does get busy on a weekend though so watch out, theres a reason its so popular. Also a pub and cafe to enjoy at the end.

Great views, gentle walk but with some uneven and muddy bits. I do this walk several times a year.

Randonnée facile mais jolie. Le tour du lac est très varié et à beaucoup plu à mon fils de 2 ans dans le porteur !
