Please note: As per July 31, users have reported that the bridge over the water is currently closed and so requires a diversion onto a less paved, water laden path. Paths on this much used circuit have been improved over the years, so much so that some resemble highways! There is a short road section after Gatesgarth Farm and a short tunnel constructed by local slate miners to enable the owner of Hassness to walk around the lake. Hassness is now part of the Ramblers Countrywide Holiday organisation. A short scramble up Comb Gill was included to facilitate a more lofty viewpoint. The village of Buttermere became famous in a Victorian melodrama, for it was here at the Fish Inn run by her parents that Mary Robinson known as the Beauty of Buttermere was seduced and bigamously married to John Hatfield. Mary’s second marriage was happier and she lived to a ripe old age largely unaware that her story was famous in literature and portrayed on the London stage. Her tale has been the subject of a novel by Melvyn Bragg.

Trail was easy going around the lake, the haystack was in our opinion, more of a hard climb than moderate... although we did have to turn back due to the weather rolling in after 7km, so we half completed the full trail but managed the lake walk.

We visited on a Monday in August and at 10:30 am the parking was running out so I would not arrive too late. There are a few points on the east shore that are a bit of a scramble so a certain level of mobility is required for this walk. A really nice walk in a beautiful setting.

Great little trail, perfect for families. Thoroughly enjoyed the cold crisp November climate and the Croft House cafe half way round was fab!

Straightforward circular loop with good footing and signage. Despite it being November, it was all easily passable and we had a great morning ramble with our pupper

Low effort high benefits! Beautiful views from start to finish with very little elevation. Some elevation via lots of small ups and downs that never tire the legs.

This is our first trail & we absolutely loved it, went with my Husband & 2 boys aged 11 & 13 plus their friend aged 12. The boys had a great time swimming in the lake & we enjoyed a lovely drink in The Fish Bar Pub around half way around. Will absolutely do this again.

An excellent easy walk. Some work taking place to a bridge so we were sent on a detour, but all well signed. Lovely cafe in Buttermere village as a reward at the end!

This is a great hike for families. We completed it with our kids age 10 and 8. Most of the trail is follows a nice path with easy walking. There are a few spots that are more moderate, especially after some heavy rains. Also, expect to get your shoes wet if it has rained. Overall, a lovely hike for all levels.

Best walk we've done in the Lake District to date. Easy to do, pub at the half way point in Buttermere. If going clockwise, the route from Buttermere back to the start point is incredible!

At the minute there’s no bridge to cross the water so we managed to hop across the stones. Very slippy though!

Great trail. Not exactly easy at parts if there’s flooding. Would highly recommend all ages. Bring some snacks or lunch and just pause somewhere and sit for an hour.
