This beautiful walk, a short distance from the car park, is a delight at any time of the year, especially if one only has a little time to spare. Do remember to take your camera. The most famous of the Lake District waterfalls, Aira Force drops an impressive 65 feet and is surrounded by pretty woodland. This easy 2 hour walk can be extended to High Force beyond or Gowbarrow fell. Look out for the famous red squirrels In the 1780's the Howard family of Greystoke Castle had an old hunting lodge or Pele Tower close to the Ullswater shore renovated into what is now Lyulph's Tower, set among its own sporting estate. They landscaped the area around the force, and used it as a pleasure garden, planting over half a million native and ornamental trees, and established a network of tracks, footpaths and bridges. In 1846 the Howards created an arboretum below Aira Force, planting over 200 specimen conifers (firs, pines, spruces and cedars) from all over the world, including a Sitka Spruce, now 118 feet high. In 1906 Gowbarrow Park, including Aira Force, came up for sale for housing plots. An appeal was launched by the recently formed National Trust, which resulted in the purchase of 750 acres. The bridges are in honour of two members of the Spring-Rice family from nearby Watermillock, and were erected by friends and members of the family. In All Saints Church at Watermillock are memorial tablets to members of the Spring-Rice family, one of whom wrote the words to the hymn 'I vow to thee my Country'.

This was stunning, I felt like I was walking in a lord of the rings movie! But it was also very steep! The staff in the gift shop were very friendly and helpful. Glad we did this walk! I wouldn’t describe it as easy though

Nice trail, have to divert off the track fairly often to take in all the sights. Tracks were very wet today, but are very well maintained. Waterfall is a must see.

beautiful trail, all in Woodlands along the stream. the trail goes up most of the way, and then back down. you have 3 options of length to choose from, but even the longest one wont take you more than 2h with stopping and taking photos. possibility to spot red squirrels.
