Alderley Edge is known for its red sandstone escarpment overlooking the Cheshire Plain and Peak District. It is less well known for its subterranean mines. Twice a year Derbyshire Caving Club open up the mines to the public in April and September - check website for details. The Engine Vein mine, one of the oldest mines on the edge has pits dug by Bronze Age men around 1750BC to get copper ore. In the first century the Romans sank a shaft and drove a tunnel into the mine. There were extensive workings during 17th and 18th centuries. Passages are followed to a large chamber where the caving club have constructed a fixed bridge to enable visitors to enter. A small passage leads off to the Blue Shaft, a sloping shaft down a fault to lower workings at the Hough Level. The Engine Vein mine also connects to Brinlow, Wood and West mines.

First to Review

It was very busy, quite a lot of bogs. Nice walk but a lot of uphill walking.
