Getting There

A circular walk starting from the Whitehill viewpoint near Kingsclere in Hampshire. The walk passes through a stunning part of the North Hampshire Downs and includes a section of the Wayfarers Walk long distance path. The views are spectacular throughout and on a clear day you will be able to see for miles across the downs. Bird lovers are also likely to be rewarded with a good chance of sightings of buzzards, kestrels and skylarks. The paths pass mainly through woodland and across fields and so are likely to be muddy after wet weather. There are a couple of sections of road walking on quiet country lanes and a number of steady ascents and descents. The walk passes through a number of kissing gates (we understand all the original stiles were replaced by gates a few years ago) and also passes through a field which is likely to contain cattle. Approximate time 3 hours.

The walk starts from the Whitehill viewpoint car park which is off the B3051 between Kingsclere and Overton in Hampshire. Approximate postcode RG20 5PY.

Lovely scenic solo walk, plenty of opportunities to see some beautiful views. The Vine pub is a nice stop off for a halfway point pint. Overall a very enjoyable hike. The route is very straightforward to follow although at the campsite don’t walk onto the actual field, there is a footpath to the left.

Nice moderate walk mostly off road with occasional farm track and country lane. The Vine pub is half way and nice if you want a pint, but if you just need somewhere to sit and eat your sarnies the village green is only 209 yards past the pub and a very pleasant little spot for a break.

I used a different start point at Hannington ( recreation ground car park at end of Ibworth Lane). Good paths on first half and great views to Whitehill as you come over the hill. The path alongside Freemantle Park Down next to the transmitter is tricky and narrow but apart from this, all were fairly good and maintained.

Lovely views and undulating walk. Car park has been know to be a target for car theft.

fabulous views although a spectacularly muddy section that is impossible to avoid at about mile 5. One wrong step will quite literally see you in "deep shit" :)

Fantastic walk with incredible views. Even stopped for blackberry picking en-route. The dogs loved it. Would thoroughly recommend.

I did this walk a couple of days ago and can't recommend it enough. Towards the end, the views across the valley are spectacular, and a great place to just sit and watch the red kites soaring beneath you. The only negative was that the gate, described at the top of section 3, was firmly padlocked so I had to climb over. This seems to be a deliberate obstruction to a right of way and would prevent walkers less agile than me from completing the walk.

We really enjoyed this walk, although no mud or water for my boys!! We stopped half way at the vine in Hannington and had lunch before setting off again
