The trail description as "out and back" is a little misleading. If you start at the Cahuita entrance you can exit 8.1 km later at the Puerto Vargas exit. The Peurto Vargas exit is a 7 minute walk to the highway where you can catch a public bus or taxi back to Cahuita. We loved this flat, mostly shaded trail that follows the coastline. Saw lots of birds and animals, and there are great places for swimming along the trail. The last 2 km to Peurto Vargas are along a well-maintained boardwalk over wetlands and through the jungle.

Nice and easy trail, lots of apes and other wildlife.
You have to cross a small river two times.
If you walk oneway you can take a local bus back.

Bring boots that can handle deep mud, and prepare to cross some streams.
