Songjiang is a district of Shanghai. It is divided in two by the Huhang expressway. The northern part is the new town, Songjiang Xincheng. It is easily accessible, being at the end of Metro line 9. The southern part near the river is the old town, where all the historic sights are. The city is located around 30km to the south-west of central Shanghai and is connected to downtown areas by buses and metro line 9. The new metro line 22, also known as the Jinshan Railway, has several stops in Songjiang, but express trains bypass some of them. Songjiang District Central Park is a newly renovated area of Songjiang, and includes a large peaceful area surrounded by green grass, trees, and lakes. It is an excellent place to go to escape the hustle and bustle of the more crowded areas of Shanghai.

I explored this area one more time this morning. I discovered that at the western end of this splendid green zone is a fantastic running / walking track. I would estimate that it is about 1/2 mile around it. There are various exercise machines along the way. There is a lake and a Tai Chi / dance / exercise stage in the middle of the track. The urban planners in Songjiang District have truly served the people of their community!

I took another morning stroll around this green zone. I found a very tiny frog jumping toward the street, with no worthy goal in sight. I caught it, and carried it down to a mossy area of one of the lakes, and let it slip away into frog paradise. I thought I should give this trail network another quick mention. Anybody who has spent any time in Shanghai should already know that there are no amazing places to hike within a 100-mile radius of the city. This is a huge city with very few green areas or mountains within its limits. Shanghai is not a hiking destination. That said, for those of us who live to walk, we must make do with what we can find. Green areas like this very nice area in Songjiang are about as good as it gets for a walk in Shanghai.

While this is probably not a hiking attraction that one should go out of their way to see, if one happens to be in the area, it is certainly a worthy spot to go for a nice walk, a jog, or to do some Tai Chi with the locals in the morning. The city has certainly done an outstanding job of carving out this very lovely green zone in the middle of the ocean of Shanghai buildings. This was obviously a very expensive city beautification project, with lots of beauty as a benefit for years to come.
