The view is worth the climb; but the flies sap the pleasure of it. Trail is well- maintained for the first half, less so at elevation. Basically straight climb up with stairs until the last 500 meters of dusty exposed rock. Quite a lesson in nature’s rejuvenation after the 2008 eruption. Freaky to see gas escaping near the summit. Weirdly it was (much) hotter at elevation than at the start. Bring plenty of water.

Beautiful short hike but not easy at all. The way up is hard, a lot of stairs. But it worth it as the way is beautiful and the view from up is amazing. Take water and a snack. And hiking poles if you are not very fit...

This is a really interesting trail to review. The entire way is pretty steep but it also has primitive stairs for much of the time. You’ll still get a good workout. On the way up you’ll have some nice views of the valley and waters of Chaitén behind you. But the view at the top is why you’re here and it doesn’t disappoint. I don’t know if the volcano is smoking all the time but it was for us (you could tell even at the trailhead) and seeing it all coming out of the tops and little vents along the slopes was the highlight. The landscape in the immediate vicinity, with contrasting dead trees and new life in the aftermath of the last eruption are also fascinating. Assuming you have a nice clear sky this is easily worth the effort.

Not an easy ascent but the view at the end is unlike anything you’ve ever seen. Totally worth it!

Volcán Chaitén was my favorite hike of the 4 we did here in Parque Pumalín and it was by far the most popular here as well. The headliner was the view from the crater both of the inner cone and outwards of Río Rayas draining out to the ocean. The latter is also the view that accompanies you up as you ascend the steep side of the mountain. Lastly, both the recovering jungle vegetation at lower altitudes and burnt out huskes of the vegetation past at higher altitudes both adds their own perspective of the volcano, from the revitalization to the destruction it brings.
